1988 Rx-7

Hello everyone, first time even browsing this forum. I'm looking at buying an 88 turbo with a brand new engine (it's not even done yet). I don't have a lot of info on it yet, haven't even seen it. It's an aqcuaintence of mine (autox buddy) that owns it, so I know that it has been taken care of. He is **** about stuff like that. He also owns a WRX that he is selling because he has an STI on order.

Anyways, it's an 88 turbo, and I think he said 10th aniv. edition, though I'm not 100% sure. He's putting a new motor in it (maybe just rebuilt), and he said that it has HKS exhaust, some wheels/tires... and some other stuff. I will definately post more as I get more details and when I see it. But, he is asking $8,000 for it, and I don't know if he'd go far below $7,000. LOL, I just realized he's probably reading this or something, who knows (he's pretty active on the WRX forums). Anyways, I'm wondering what you guys think of the price? I NEED a RWD car and this sounds like a good opportunity.

Thanks

kyle

edit: oh and I forgot, KBB was like $4000, but it can't really factor in a new engine.

The anniversary editions are white.
The taillights trim are painted white to match the car.
There are little rotary badges in front of the doors on the front fenders. The key might have a rotor in it.
It will have black leather interior.

A 2nd Gen RX7 Turbo with a rebuild engine is a good find. Depending on who is rebuilding it as well and with what parts.

Try to find out if they are rebuiling it themselves or having someone else do it. Find out if the builder knows rotary engines well enough.

From what I understand 3rd Gen Springs(or corner seals?) or something are a good investment when rebuilding.

8k is pretty high. It would have to be incredible for that price fo me to buy it.

Some things to look for are:
Windshield wiper and heater controls working in all positions(wipers usually only work in 1 or 2 by now)

also see if they still have the white stock rims. You can sell them for some good money.

Okay, I've got more info, I can't remember it all though:

It IS a 10th aniversary edition, has original wheels, original paint, original 10th aniv bra, 10th aniv floor mats. It has an HKS intake, custom stainless exhaust (no cats or resonator), tockiko shocks, an extra set of regular tubo II wheels with toyo racing slicks, the engine is almost done, it's a complete rebuild, turbo was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago. New clutch, aftermarket sway bars, lots of suspension goodies. They did lots of stuff to the internals that I don't really know about (something about 3 way oil sprayer like the 3rd gen? and more...) they ported the ports (that sounds wierd), the "walls" or whatever were smoothed by a company in Florida. It has lots of extras, he's going to type me up a list because I can't remember most of it. also has aftermarket knock sensor that tells how far the timing is retarded and the a/f ratio, aftermarket boost guage, the tranny was cryo'd, sounds like a ton of work.

What do you guys think about all this? Anyone here have a 10th aniv. edition?

Um.. Smoothed the walls?

There is a thin nitrite layer on something on the internals which helps combustion from what I understand.

That is why people use good condition used ones and don't just lap them.

Dunno if this will pertain to you ,but something for you to look into.

ALSO, for porting. Find out what port job they did.

If it's a Streetport then it will last almost as long a stock block and give some good horse.

If it's a Bridgeport then be careful. They are crazy *****'s and create great HP but don't last very long(30K est.).

It was a streetport, I remember him saying that. Also, I don't know what the walls are he was talking about... I think he was talking about what the rotors run along (similar to cylinder walls in a piston engine)

I'm not sure on the sunroof, I went to talk to the guy today but he wasn't at his work. How's reliability on the turbos?

Reliability's not as good as N/As, but if ya just got a rebuild... Probably 100k+, if ya don't absolutely beat it.

Looks like ya got a couple of daily drivers there, anyway, so ya wont have it out all the time. Sounds like a pretty good deal -- would cost ya plenty to do it up from stock the same way.

Not too into the white cars, though.
