Talking 1987 rx7 gtu help

i just bought a 87 gtu last friday
im 17 and know were little but some about rotary
all my friends are into hondas so i know more about them but wanted something diffrent then everyone else so i got a rx7

as you can probably guess i wanna do some performance stuff
its got a 13b motor
and exhaust but only from cat back and sounds crappy
i wanna change that but heard might a well go custom cause if backpressure isnt correct you can mess stuff up?

anything i should know about these cars other then to let it warm up and when it floods to pull the enj (learned that the hard way the day after i got it)

also what can i do for performance?
anything would be greatly apreciated

Well, before you get flamed into hell for the obvious post in the wrong forum, I will advise you to start reading, start with the FAQs. Learn about the rotary and how it functions.. then..

Read the following links:

and keep reading forum posts.

Yes, welcome dz4shsy.

All of your basic questions have been answered before, some of them in the FAQ threads at the top of the Second Gen Specific section.

Probably the best thing you can do when you're starting out is to forget about trying to mod your car until you have carefully gone over every system in the car to make sure everything is working as well as possible. You should start by downloading the Factory Shop Manual (FSM) if you don't already have it. Here's a link from the FAQ:

http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1986_1988/

That said, there have been numerous threads about increasing the performance of your NA FC RX-7; most of them will tell you that the NA will never be very fast unless you either swap in a turbo engine or at the very least rebuild the engine and street port it. Some minor gains can be made with the right exhaust. As you are aware, with an S4 car like yours, you don't want to totally eliminate exhaust backpressure. Lots of people have recommended the advice in this "Beefy NA" thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ighlight=beefy

There's tons more info on the subjects of CAI, exhaust, throttle body mods, weight reduction, etc. Do some searching.

Finally, since there was no GTU model in 1987, you either have a different model car or a different year. The GTU was first offered in 1988 and again in 1989-1990 though there were some pretty big differences. Check the thread about "What Did the RX-7 Come With" also at the top of this section.

If you're willing to search and be patient, you can learn just about anything you need or want to know about these cars on this site. Good luck with it!
