Would It be of any benifit to replace stock mufflers with aftrer market ones. Or would I need to replace the catalytic converters to increase hp.

Well, just going to a straight flow muffler on my 240 make a big difference with the factory cat still in place, and since the rx-7 responds to exhaust mods better than my 240 does i'm guessing you'd probably see quite a difference in just the mufflers.

Will replacing the mufflers effect the 5th and 6th ports?
Will it decrease low end torque?

I highly doubt it, the backpressure is at the cat area not near the mufflers. I would replace the cat though if you're gonna do the mufflers too (if you have the money). I really like the bonez system (rx7.com).

My seat of the pants meter felt an increase of torque when I put on my RB cat back.

Ok here's my story. My sister just bought a new BMW so now the 86 rx-7 gets passed down to me (first owned by mother). So the left muffler has fallen completely of from the pipe and the right side one only the tip has broken off. My mom plans on replacing both of them just to be safe. The car is noisy as shiz wihtout the mufflers. On tuesday, tomorrow, we're getting the new mufflers put on, so i asked my mom since i'm gonna be driving it can i choose the mufflers and shes like sure aslong as they dont cost more than 300 (hopefully she's talking each) and they dont sound like those noisy things that scream down our block every night, sort of a quote, i dont talk like that. So i need sumthing cheap yet dependable, not noisy and and good for when i start doing mods to the engine. what should i get? Oh and its the N/A rx-7 for now. Some one recomended the Thermal, is that the actual name like thermal exaust system cause i dont want to go to the guy looking like a dumbass and does anyone know how much they go for. Please we going to the guy tomorrow and i need to know by like midnight tonite. Thanx alot guys, boy i'm gonna love this car.

Get some nice Dynomax mufflers, they are about $110 each and sound great and handle the extreme heat well.

Catco makes nice high flow cats for about $100.

Actually scroll down on the left and select muffler to see the mufflers. That link didn't go where I thought it did. and actually they are $89 each.
