hi everybody im turning 17 on the 27th of march,my parents have been asking me what i want for my birthday.up until 2 days ago i had no clue when all of the sudden it hit me.ive been cruising around thepartstrader.com and i noticed that there are a couple of blown 13b-t floating around for under $500.my plan is to buy the motor and that video from atkinsrotory.com and try and rebuild(port maybe) it myself.then i can look for just a body and drivetrain to buy.but i have 2 questions.is this really even possible,or is my head in the clouds.if so list some of the tools i would need to accomplish this task.my estimated time for completion hopefully before august.am i an idiot or am i just stupid?
also is there anyone in houston that would be able to help a young first timer(free hopefully).

yu would need access to an impact wrench and an assortment of sockets, mainly 10,12,14,17,19 mm. its possible, but i sugggest having an intimate knowledge of the engine, i am 19 and have been learning about the rotary for about 4 months and i am currently rebuilding one with the assistance of Mazdaspeed7, quite the knowledgeable guy, i suggest finding someone you can go to in person if yo need some help.
jst post a threadin here asking if there is anyone in your city on the forum. that what i did.

It is a very expensive task... I suggest that you buy a rebuilt engine. It takes about an extra $500.00 to rebuild the engine if the housings and rotors are good. If they happen to be bad when you open the engine then tthat would be another $500.00 at least. Go to a local import engine seller and buy one. I belive that there is an import engine dealer near beechnut and hwy 59 or close to it. I dont remember (I used to live in houston).
I'm 19 and I'm taking a dremel to my housings!
I've been learning about rotaries for over a year. With a little knowledge, some denero, and some ***** you can do this. The internal components are very straightforward, once you see them up close. Clearances are all very precise.

Dude, just do it. Download the copy of the factory service manual, follow the intructions step by step, and follow through. When I was 16 I built my first chevy 350 ( 417.8 Hp 412.3 Ft/lbs ) When I was getting ready for the project i was a bit intimidated, but through the process and after the successful result, i realized one thing. Now it does sound harsh and im not trying to be offensive, but when rebuilding (or building) your first engine of any type( rotary or piston), the one thing you have to realize is:
Suck it up and dont be a *****! Have confidence in yourself, follow the manuals precisely, work smart and diligently, and you will reach your goal. Dont cheat yourself of this experience man, follow through with this and you will never regret it.

Maybe if you do a good job, you can become the rotary guy in your area and make some cash on the side doing something you love. I would feel special if I knew how to port and rebuild rotaries, you will become the envy of your friends.

ill be 19 on sunday the 17th and i am just learning i am gunna do the same but i got a 87 parts car i am gunna practice on if i mess up oh well and then when i know what i am doing i will work i my 91 n/a and build it up.
I think it's pretty doable. Just have all the tools ready and take your time following the manual and specs. If you manage your time properly, you should be able to finish it pretty quickly.
I wish I could do my own rebuild but I work full-time and go to school full-time. It would take me forever to do it and I want to have it soon.

Plan on buying a new rotor and housing for the engine too, they usually destroy themselves when they die.

Alright!!!!!!!
i have 2 more questions.what kind of stand do u put a 13b on? will it mount on a traditional roticery(cant spell) how long did it take u guys to knock out your first rebuild?and finally is it hard to port your own housings?because i also wanna buy porting template from RB and try to port the housing.hell while i have the engine apart i might decide to try and port the upper/lower intake manifold.
DAMN, I CANT WAIT TO GET STARTED. THIS IS GONNA BE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

TWO MORE THINGS
ON ONE OF THE MOTORS I WANNA BUY THE GUY SAYS THE WATER SEAL IN THE REAR HOUSING IS WHAT CAUSES THE MOTOR NOT TO WORK.IS THIS A MAJOR PROBLEM THAT IS GOING TO COST ALOT OR IS IT JUST DISASSEMBLE AND REPLACE?
IS THERE A KIT WHERE I CAN GET ALL OF THE GASKETS NEEDED TO DO THIS REBUILD OR DO I HAVE TO PURCHES THEM INDIVIDUALLY?
DAMN,U GUYS ARE HELPIN' ME OUT ALOT. KEEP THE REPLIES COMMIN'
to answer ur question 4rxz yes thats exactly what im planning. im doin it this way, because i love racing and i plan on racing this motor.and if u race of course ur gonna break the motor at one point or another..if i cant rebuild a rotory myself i would rather not buy a rx7,because i dont have the money to pay someone to do it for me.if i buy the motor first i and cant rebuild it i just have a motor to sell.if i buy the car with a blown motor and i cant rebuild it i am stuck with a whole ca r to sell.get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i just cant stress how much u guys have boosted my confidence level and helped me out.THANX SO SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No Fear No Problem
Hey, I'm in houston too and I've been wanting to do the same damn thing. I just turned 18. Send me an email if you ever get something going. And BTW--I have a blown motor in my car right now (13bt), drop me an email, maybe we can get together sometime. dcamco@houston.rr.com Peace
I was 17yrs. old when I did MY engine
. (so YES IT IS DOABLE)
It's really easy, just get an impact wrench and a Haynes manual (or better yet, a REAL shop one if you can afford it). took me about 2 weeks, but that was b/c i had to wait for parts.... Should be about 2-3 days of labor
time
*REMEMBER to follow the Haynes/Shop Manual WORD FOR WORD and you'll be alright, take your time too, rushing causes mistakes
)
Good Luck!
