10AE Transmission - Driving a Truck?

Hi there,

Now that the engine is finally rebuilt, I'm having the opportunity to drive the 10AE more often.

With that, though, I'm noticing how bad the shifter feels when compared to the '90 vert NA my wife used to have.

Is the transmission really this awkward to find gears on a 10AE or could it be just the bushings failing? It feels like I'm shifting a truck every time, having to carefully find the gears between every shift.

i just did the bushings in mine, and it made a bigger difference than i would have thought, you might try that first.

We had replaced the bushings on her vert but even with the original being obliterated, it still wasn't nearly as bad as this thing is. Looks like I'm definitely gonna take it apart to see if the bushings are even in there anymore, but I'm scared the car could have been trans swapped at some point... Hopefully not.

I would recommend replacing both the upper and lower shifter bushings as well as the rubber boots/ insulators around the shifter. My 10AE shifter feels fine. Throws are slightly long when compared to any of my 1st Gen RX-7's or my RX-8's. Just rhe way that transmission is. However, it's mostly direct and shifts are light, albeit slightly notchy. I've grown used ot it and it doesn't bother me.

Thanks guys. We'll be putting it on jack stands in a few months to get the diff mount replaced so we'll probably tackle it all together.

We do still have a short shifter we had bought from Mazdatrix for the vert a few years back, so if the bushings don't work we might try to see if the shifter fits. I don't want to touch her car without permission otherwise I'd be pulling the shifter as I type this lol
