1000 '89 turbo II help

I recently bought a 1000 rx7 turbo and am currently taking things apart and cleaning. I got it for 1000 dollars because of the engine is misfiring. My friend said it smells and smokes like a two stroke. Should i rebuild or replace the engine?

Rebuild

sounds like you have ignition/fuel problems for it to backfire a lot.(they backfire normally but not tons) smoke is probably from oil rings going bad.

You should really try to make sure it needs an engine first. The smoking could be too much premix or the turbo.

Not enough info. on what's going on. Car mods? Timing good? A bunch of stuff to go over.

You need a compression check at some point in the process too. First.
