100+ amp alternator

I have searched and havent found anything, but I am sure there is something somwehere (search doesnt seem to work well on this forum )

I wanted to find some info on either an aftermarket higher amp alternator or on using the FD application on my turbo s4.

Feel free to post the link to some info and close this thread

The diameter of the stator on the stock 2nd gen alternator is 129mm, our unit is 142mm. I dont mean to give you bad news but there is no way you are putting out 155amps on a stock rebuilt unit. It takes a certain amount of iron and copper to produce a certain amount of power. Period.

Now....that 155 amps, is that hot rated or cold rated? Cause there is a big difference between the two. Our 150 amp unit is hot rated and even that number is conservative. These shops use a larger rectifier but there is still the same amount fins on the heatsink to cool the rectifier. And let me say this, consider yourself lucky if they even use a larger rectifier as most dont. It would definately be better then stock but you will eventually burn up the rectifier.

Believe me, these rebuild shops have no problem lying to their customers about what the alternator will put out.

Romain Electric In seattle rebuilt it for me. they told me on there tester that it was putting out 153 amps. I have no reason to beleive that they are lying to me. I was told that it would be about 120 amps.

So now of course you have me wondering...and of course I'm going to have to pull it and find out for sure. Looks like I'll be driving downtown this week.

Actually the FC coupe (not vert) acoustically is a kick *** car for a high end stereo.

The stock alt is really small, it barely has juice for much more than the stock electrical load. I got a FD alt while silverrotor was selling them, it seems to keep up allright with my power needs.

600 watts in my setup. behind the seat bins have an amp each and small sub box sliding around in the hach. maybe 60 pounds more weight at most. and very very enjoyable. I was just looking for about 110 ish amp wise and the shop said they could do 120ish and when they where done they said 150ish an the scale.

you're totally right, the FC is a nice acoustic cabin but it wasn't really built for that purpose.

it pisses me off when i build a motor knowing it will be to tote around a 500lb stereo.

Send it our way and we can show you what it puts out starting from idle all the way to full output. Is the 153 cold or hot rated? And what type of power does it put out at idle? When they hit 153, how long were they able to keep it there?

Anyone know where I can get a beefy 500lb. stereo for my '7? That'd be pimpin'.

From what I know about alternators and motors, you could increase the output of an equally sized alternator with a beefy cooling fan. Peak output would not increase, but continuous output would.

J/K about the stereo.

The temperature would have to be lowered significantly in order to see more output and that will not happen much with a "beefy" cooling fan. You couldn't put a fan large enough to make a big difference. Most alternators today have two internal fans, one front and one rear. The reason for the rear fan is for cooling the rectifiers. Using a different wire on the stator also helps output which has very little to do with heat.
