could also be loose battery cables if you just replaced the battery.

Batteries can fail early.

The stress of tightening the post clamps can fracture the post connection inside on a brand new battery

And if that's the case, the person doing the install severely overtorqued the terminals. Most battery manufacturers spec torque in inch pounds and it's almost always under 20.

now that you have the battery out, take a DMM and set it to measure resistance, the omega character. go into your car and turn everything off like any other day, attach the leads to the corresponding terminals and check if anything is drawing power. Also having your alternator checked wouldn't hurt either, most auto parts stores do it for free.

I work at advance auto...I've sold batteries that come back dead. Could also be an internal short.

yesterday i had to jump it and drove it some, today it was dead again so i jumped it again, drove it for a while longer, got gas ,shut it off, fired right up, went home for about 4 hours, started right up? when i was driving i had a healthy 14 volts but at idle everything went dim and dropped to 12... is the battery shot?? i know you told me this over and over but im just checkin so i dont go buying another 70 dollar battery... also, is it time to upgrade to a FD alternator with the voltage drop? that was with heater, headlights and stereo on for a referance.

Dropping voltage randomly is not a battery problem...It is an alternator or alternator wiring problem.

I guess I should post my voltage test checklist:

Engine running, headlights & heater fan on high:
Alternator post to alternator frame = 14-14.5 volts (verifies the alternator output)
alternator post to battery (+) = 0 volts (verifies the primary + wire)
alternator frame to battery (-) = 0 volts (verifies the primary ground)
Turn off the motor, but leave the lights on.
Battery (+) to battery (-) = ~12.5 volts and holds steady. (verifies battery)

My car sat for 2 days. Yesterday I tried starting my car and nothing. Jumped it. Today I tried it again, nothing. Checked with voltmeter. 7.5volts! This battery says jan 06 on the side. Hope it's just a bad batt and not a short. Never had a problem before. Lucky for me I work at Batteries plus. I have seen new batts go bad.

Batteries can lose thier charge if not used for a while. take it to autozone and have them charge it for an hour then tell them to test it. if still bad replace it refund from where you bought it if you can.
