1 full tank= 150miles WTF

i had really good luck the last time i asked for advise from everyone, now i need help again. even when i first bought the car and did a tune up, ive been getting really crappy gas mileage. ive asked acouple people in my area about how many miles to the tank they get, they both say around 300. what could be wrong with my 7. is this a sign of something worse to come.

thanx everyone

First off, it all depends on how you drive

A friend with a firebird can drive all week on a tank of gas if hes nice, or he can kill a 1/4 tank one morning on way to work if he gets on it

your profile says you have an 88 GXL, is this still right?

What have you replaced? the first thing i would check would be the O2 sensor

The most I got was 315 on a tank.

Usually I get 300 to the tank. I pre-mix though.

If you have a haynes manual it tells you how to check to see if its working properly.

monte- I feel your pain. I have an 88 gxl which runs well, knock on wood. But i too was getting 125 miles on a full tank. Before I changed the fuel filter I was averaging about 60 miles on 11 dollars of 87 fuel approx 5.1 gallons- now since I changed the fuel filter im at about 80 miles- not a bad improvement , but by no means economical. Im lookin to replace more parts in order to improve my gas mileage---Good luck , and let me know if you come up with anything---Ren

just replace it, it is only a $25 part.

If you are getting that bad mileage, but the car starts and runs fine other than that, then you need to do a full tune up, including all filters (oil, air, fuel), spark plugs and cables, change the coolant, change the oil in the engine and driveline, belts, and the O2 sensor.

I get around 250 to the tank. I did get 350 miles to the tank one time. After I changed my fuel filter, the gas mileage got better. Oh, and do what Icemark says, he's a good/smart man.

Check everything! Check the AFM, TPS, all sensors and solenoids, and everything else that you can get specs for. The car might run OK if one or 2 of these components are out of whack, but it could cause way too much gas being dumped into the engine. I finally have everything within specs and I'm getting at least 20mpg now with daily redlining.

Well my friend before pre-mix I got 280 miles to the tank after i get 300-315 to the tank. We believe that it is several things that contribute to this: I am a bit leaner because of the oil in the tank replacing some fuel, the plugs are not getting all that nasty build up on them cuz it burns cleaner, and less carbon overall.

I am happy with pre-mix cuz it saves me cash.

P.S. gallon of gas=1.36 dollars 16oz of pre-mix=95 cents saves me 41 cents a fill up.

I get about 270km on 55liters of 92octane which is around 12.1MPG
Recently I noticed that My car doesnt have a O2 sensor, I guess that the former owner took it out when he put in the headers. I fixed the loose connection at the Water Temp. Sensor that was a little improvement and she doesnt fart so much more now that she is on a diet

opening up your exhaust will give you better gas mileage, if you can resist pissing it away having fun
i wonder what other performance mods can help out with gas mileage?
my base is so untuned it gets garbage mileage, definately needs o2 changed and fuel filter.
