1/4 time for all those with an AUTO!!

I am just curious to see if i'm just way too slow or just about normal!!

just an S4 with S5 intake manifold + exaust +all emissions removed and none of the ports working right..

17.3 sound bad or about normal

-Shawn

btw the auto was prety much gone when i did this run (revers was going out, and would not shift into 3rd unless u let off the gas)

vert wtf

I think i asked this question before, either that or really wondered about it. But what makes an Auto Vert so much more slower, than one of the hardtop autos? is it just because it weighs more? or is it more technical than that? id really like to kno

The weight. They had the same rear ends (3.9) and gearing, but those verts weighed in around 3,400lbs or so? And the NA's are around 2750 or something like that

I didn't think the auto's were that bad, 17.8? was your car running right? This is not an insult, I have driven an auto coupe that runs PERFECT, and it's not a fast car by any means, but it has some pickup. It felt doggish off the line, but from a roll it went OK.

this might help u understand why, the engine probly could have used a tune up but i don't think it would have helped that much. the rear suspension is also shot on the car which might contribute to y also it was so slow (putting new shocks and springs in tomorrow ) the car also had a full tank of gas (y i did that i will never know)

Mark'sMazda, did u do a neutral drop??? i wanted to but i feared towing the car home, so when the light turned green i just stomped it

-Shawn (This vert might be slow but i bet it will pick up more hoes)

I didn't do any neutral drops, I know the owner of the car, and I don't think they would like me driving their car like that. I did load up the torque converter by brake torquing it. The car didn't have the HP to do a brake stand, so I thought a little rpm, with the energy built up in the TQ would "sling shot" the car off the line.....I thought wrong.

btw-this "pre-load" trick does work preaty well on most auto. cars.

my main bitch about the auto is it's gearing. Not the rear end, but the trans it's self. I have driven other automatic cars with about the same hp/weight, that have more "normal" gearing, and they feel a lot stronger.

5spd FC auto
1st-30 1st-40
2nd-60 2md-80
3rd-90 3rd-110?
4th-125? 4th-not limited by gearing
5th-not limited by gearing

These are just a rounded speeds, but you can see how over geared the auto is.

well i always thought it was the low tq issue our engines have that make the auto suck so much

-Shawn
btw, u got the auto gears right. i am assuming since i still have the 3.9 diff i can get a little more outta my gears now that i have a 5-speed,

The low TQ does hurt the auto's but I think it's the way to high gearing that really kills it.

When I broke the rear end in my S5 NA 5spd, I replaced it with a rear from an auto, and didn't notice anything differnt.
