1 and 2 coils, important?

is it crucial to have the correct ignition cable going to the correct rotor housing? i searched the FSM over a million times and all i found was a referal to "front" and "rear" housings, nothing about 1 and 2 housing.

i just swapped out my starter after it not wanting to start half the time and now it seems like the car is not getting spark. it was running prefectly fine before the starter finally went out.

i had to unplug the spark plug wires from the coils to get underneath to inspect the wiring...

1 = Front
2 = Rear

Both the leading and trailing coil packs have the numbers 1 and 2 marked on them for easy identification. It actually doesn't matter if you hook up the leading plugs the wrong way around but is definitely matters if the trailing plugs are wrong. Damage can occur!

Is your engine not starting or running badly?

i know about the leading and trailing and have it correct (it is marked on the rotor housings and coils after all). I was just wondering if it could screw up my starting by switching the housings around (rotor 1 and rotor 2).

basically my troubles started when the starter went bad...

before i replaced the starter i basically took a bunch of stuff out of the way around the drivers side of the engine bay to inspect for melted wires, unplugged connections, missing/ broken grounds, blown relays etc...

when i put the new starter in all it wants to do is sit and crank crank crank...

fuel pump comes on, good pressure

there is a slight thump thump thump coming from the exhaust like you can hear the rotors turning around and smell unburnt fuel.

i tried the unflooding techniques (remove plugs,clean, oil, turn motor a few times etc)

compression sounds good, the car ran excellent before the starter went out. I push started it once at the gas station so i could get home but ran great on the drive home.

i just dont think its getting spark. could a bad starter cut relay cause no coil power but supply power to fuel and starter? i have another relay i can swap into it to test when i have time.

when i try to push start it since i started to mess with it after the new starter installation it just makes a small exhaust note for 1/2 a second and the car stops. maybe its only getting power to leading? or maybe just to trailing?

Mixing up the trailing plugs can cause engine damage but it wouldn't prevent the plugs from firing or the engine from starting.

Pull a leading plug out, plug it into its lead, hold the plug's electrode against a stryt tower nut with pliers and crank the engine over. Watch for spark.

Nope, not related.

It would still start and run fine, but without the leading plugs would be down on power a lot.

so im basically grounding the tip of the spark plug up against the car body? what could cause a sudden " no spark" issue? any relays or connections i should check other than the ones that plug directly into the coils? this crap is driving me nuts.... all i want is a car to drive to work....

your just grounding the spark plug to the body to see if its sparking, have an assitant( i say have the assistant do this because it hurts to hell if you do it) hold the spark plug near a ground on your body of the car. try and crank the car over and if you see sparks you should be good. try all four plug wires. if all that works and its still not running, get a voltmeter and test the amps coming from each plug wire. haynes gives a clear demonstration on how to do this on page 55 or you could hold your finger in front of it... haha might be a little more painfull though. take all your spark plugs out and make sure the trailing and leading plugs are in the right place, right before the nut on the plug they will have either an L or and T make sure the ones with the L go on the bottom of the block and t goes on the top. also as scary as this sounds, i thought i had the exzact same issue where i wasn't getting spark... but the i did a compression check...deffinetly blew an apex seal.... just because you hear what good compression should sound like doesnt always mean thats what its going to be...

i actually had time to mess around with it today and i said "**** it, im putting everything ive taken off/ swapped out other than the starter back on...". i got lots of free parts from a parts car not too long ago and i swappe most of them out since they physically looked better (stupid I know, but hey i just did it because i could...). i also removed the small box in the corner next to the coil, start cut and brake cylinder. i think that was the culprit since after i reinstalled it it fired right up. i was told that it was for the alarm system and that you can remove it... aparantly not. i figured that since the rest of the alarm system has been removed for some time now that it would be ok. so im thinking this is the neutral switch? too many names too remember.

also... when i took the starter off about a week or so ago i found a small black mitsibishi spade connecter just dangling near the starter. i was told it might be a knock sensor?? strange place for it...

No. That one is for the coils.
