•CA Smog Questions•

Im buying a JDM motor (S5T2) from a vendor on this form. I'm going to be swapping it into my FB. (GSL-SE) I live in CA so I'm going to have to take the car to get reffed. My questions are;

I know I need a US ecu,
But do I need a US mafs?
Will the JDM harness work with a US ecu?
And for the Egr valve, I need to switch manifolds right?

Your input is appreciated, and please don't be rude!
Everyone has to start somewhere

AFM outputs should be the same.

A JDM emissions harness is shorter, but I don't know if that matters as much for swaps into FBs. There should be plenty of info in the 1st gen section FAQ.

No S5s had EGR valves, so you'll have to adapt a US S4 TII LIM. The intake ports are not the same size, so the manifold will have to be ported, and you'll have to use an S5 UIM to match. You also will have no ECU control over the EGR, since the S5 ECUs never had to. If they test the EGR, you'll fail. Your new engine is required to have the same emissions equipment (or more) as the original.

No S5 at all JDM or the ones in the US had a Egr valve? Because if the us ones didn't come with one than I want be responsible for fitting it to a motor that it didn't belong on. I plan on ordering my motor within the next couple of days and I'm trying to compile a parts list for my swap.

the US S5 t2's don't have an EGR. the big difference between the JDM and US engines is the ecu, the wiring harness goes to the other side, but this actually might be better in an FB swap.

the JDM engine doesn't have the AWS system, which may not be on the list as an emissions part, so it may not matter.

the JDM air pump is smaller, but it'll pass out the tailpipe, so maybe that's fine? worst case you get a US air pump.

the JDM Air Control Valve is missing the two little solenoids, which again make no difference in the tailpipe emissions once the car is warmed up.

the US ecu will throw codes for the AWS and the two ACV solenoids, but you could fool it with resistors. or install em, which ever

Good point about the codes that an S5 can throw for missing equipment. My S4 conversion doesn't have to deal with any of that.

Neither US or JDM S5s have EGR valves or the mounting point on the LIM.

My S4 JDM ACV has the port air solenoid, but not the split air solenoid (and I believe it's the same for S5 JDM). The split air passage is still there, and there is a 1/16" hole that is always open, so it's still functional. There's just no split air solenoid to open an additional 3/16" hole while in 5th gear. Boohoo from a tail pipe emissions standpoint, but the solenoid is missing. You could get around this by picking up a S4 US TII ACV to go with your S4 TII LIM.

The JDM air pump is smaller, but it also has a smaller pulley, so it pumps faster. It works well on my car. If you wanted to switch to a US air pump, you'll also need both brackets.

^which belt did you use for the smaller jdm ap? I couldn't use my stock belt for the ap cause it was too big. I just decided to reuse the usdm one and brackets.

just be clear, the S5 has no EGR, so we don't have to run it.

also you're right about the split air thing, but even in CA we don't do the smog test in 5th, so it doesn't matter, except if there is a fellow from the C.A.R.B. trying to check it off his list, but yeah the US ACV is the fix.
