Today I was tightening a bolt on the LIM. So I kept tightening and it kept spinning without tightening further. Shortly thereafter the head popped off and I realized the error in my ways.

my old truck

so i was replacing the intake and carb on my 79 chevy pickup, i had an idiot friend helping me out, every bolt we took out we were putting into a coffee can full of gas to clean them, not a prob, put everything back together and we were missing some bolts, couldn't find them in the driveway grass, anywhere, so we got some bolts from the bin inside, no big deal, engine ran fine but had a small knock, didn't think anything about it, wasn't loud at all, then lost power, engine ran like crap after a couple weeks, we ripped the engine down to block just figuring it was done, turns out there were 3 bolts jammed into 2 pistons, was pretty bad, the heads were all beat up, and the pistons were obviously gone

as far as the fc, nothing to bad, however the shop that put my clutch in... whoa great time there, first i had to wait an extra day for the car so they could get an exhaust gasket, got it back, leak, pretty bad too, had to wait 2 more days for another gasket, great, then week later (2 weeks after clutch now) my car dies great, i just put an alarm in think maybe i tapped into fuel pump instead of trunk ground wire, ****!! leave the car overnight in a parking lot, the next day i had to cut the belt on the A/C cause it was froze solid, then my wife yells STOP there is a fire and smoke and ahhh,(women) so i look see nothing, have her crank it, turns out the damn idiot that replaced my started when he did the clutch never hooked the NEG bat term back up to the starter bolt, he just jammed it between the oil sending unit and the motor, great !! he says no way, but who else took my starter off??? At that point i was really pissed!! I assume he is at fault for the a/c being blown, bad ground = bad a/c clutch they still refuse to pay for that but he did pay to get the thing running again, it ended up flooding and loosing compression from cranking, now i think i have to take it back to them soon, my clutch doesn't engage/disengage till almost at top pedal, pretty pissed..

so 1000 bucks gets you a shitty cluth, a starter that isn't put back right, no a/c, oh and they threw in a new (words escaping me) but the hyro clutch at the tranny thing LOL, ahh lets not forget the exhaust leak!

Got my TII from a wrecker lot, it had caught fire, pd i believe. did fuel system upgrades, pump, regulator and custom lines and rails. Anyway, I was testing the system and forgot to tighten the nut on the regulator. Took it for a test drive and it did great. When I got back I popped the hood to check fuel pressure and it smelled like fuel, bad. I looked at my regulator and the gauge said 80+. So i turned it down and started it up to set it to 40, set it and still smell fuel, then see smoke. Fuel was coming out of my rail/line connection on the secondary rail and landing on the HOT TURBO. The extra rail pressure blew the line loose and I was about to burn it up AGAIN! Shut er down and prayed to the rotary gods that I could get to the garden hose before it burst into flames. I made it without igniting the fuel but it was smoking really bad right before the water rinsed it off. Luck, just luck.

Speaking of idiot friends. This is what me and 2 friends did working for 24 hours straight

1. remove old civic hatch motor
2. dissasemble motor to get rear main seal cap bolts
3. finish assembling new motor.
4. Install motor
5. Install turbo kit
6. Make custom FMIC and cut bumper for it
7. start tuning new turbo motor setup
8. one problem....one of the guys attachech my turbo oil feed line to a oil distribution block I had made.....there where 3 ports and two block off plates. He had threaded the oil feed to a oil block off plug!!!
Needless to say my garret T3 super 60 lasted 2 days before it died a horrible death.

Ok, first time I have ever really done anything serious under a hood and I'm replacing my water pump. Easy job cuz the guy who had it before me took the rats nest out so the pump is just sitting right there in front of you, right? Well I get the old one off, put the new one on, get all the lines back on and I'm feeling pretty damn good about myself! Next master mechanic! So I go to start it and it cranks up and water GUSHES out of the engine bay! Oh ****! I killed it I thought. My Dad comes out:

D - "what'd you do?"
M - "I don't know! I followed the manual!"
D - "Did you put silicon over the seals?"
M - "Silicon?"

Here's one: My Bro wanted to change his thermostat. He removed the waterneck, upper radiator hose and old thermostat. He buttoned everything back together and as he was going to start the car to check for leaks, he sees the new thermostat sitting on the driver's seat. I was laughing my A$$ off.

First time installing my turbo motor I couldn't figure out why it would run fine till it got warm and then run on 1 rotor. So I was doing tons of test to see if fuel and spark was getting to where it needed to for 2 days strait, 8 hours in the hot summer sun. I was starting to go crazy ( I could tell by what I was about to do) I went inside grabbed two oven mitts, put them on, went back outside to the car, grabbed a spark plug cable while the car was running, and pulled it off the coil. I was wearing some shorts with a little metal circle buckle, sagging a little bit so it was right where you don't want it to be. I was leaning on the car to pull off the wire and the zap went right through me, out my little tweak :P, into the cars body, 5 or 6 times till I was able to let go. I don't know why I thought oven mitts would protect me.... haha I took a good 4 hour nap after that one. Turns out I just had the injectors in the wrong places. Lesson learned with shock therapy.

Way back when I was putting the engine in my FC I was working on bolting the the transmission up and I had the starter motor still connected and sitting in its hole but unbolted. The thing fell out and nailed me in the forehead and that hurt pretty bad but what hurt worse was the back of my head nailing the concrete.

haha nice!

I helped a friend remove the front cover his FC.. a few days later, he complained of leaking oil from the front of the engine/oil pan area. It sounded to me the oil pan was leaking, cause we didnt really seal it with rtv or anything when we bolted the front back onto the front cover. So we spend the afternoon replacing the oil pan gasket, which involves loosening engine mounts, etc.. we got it all buttoned up, started it, and sure enough it started leaking in the same spot again. Then i remembered we never retightened the oil cooler line when we put the front cover on the first time

and a few months ago i had just installed manual hubs on my pathfinder. the next mornign driving to work, i hear a weird wobbly/grinding sound from one of the front wheels.. forgot to tighten lug nuts

A starter is freakin heavy to receive right on the forehead.

So, I made this thread so we could all share the stupid things we did with or to our FCs while building/repairing/customizing or driving it. This should be funny. Don’t be shy, we all made mistakes. And sharing these mistakes will prevent other members fo doing the same ones…probably.

Let me start. I have a couple of good ones…

Well, I made a J-Spec swap this winter. And I’m the kind of guy that double checks everything twice at least…except this one time, and it bite me in the ***…think I’m still bleeding from that ****…Anyhow, I’m putting in my new J-spec engine in and since I removed everything from the engine bay to paint it, I figured I’d plug the starter just to see if it would crank…When I come to plug it in, instead of checking exactly on which pole goes the large wire to the starter, I figure I would assume it goes there by judging from the natural shape of the wire…

Well….you guess it. WRONG POLE. And she was sure to show me I made a mistake…by melting the freaking gauge cluster…Turns out she grounds her self with the speedo cable when you choose the wrong pole. And the gauges don’t like that. It also killed my battery…

DOH!

Freakin princess....
i've done this one when i did my first clutch job. didnt notice that the car had filled up with smoke until my dad yell at me. oops..

Swapped out a bad transmission and drove the new one 50 miles with no fluid. I just plain forgot to add the transmission fluid.

I had 2 broken trannies.

Took both bad trannies apart and built one good working tranny.

AS far as the hood incident: I've never had that happen to me. I did, however, see it pop up but the latch caught it and I pulled over. I am glad it didn't fly up and almost kill me.

This really isn't that bad. My prelude is the only car I have left a thermostat in. I consider it an upgrade...

Not going into detail here cause it's off topic, but that's usually a bad idea.

I've been topping off my clutch fluid (slow leak) and forgot to put the lid on atleast 3 times this month. Now the top right side of my hood sits up about 1/4 inch...

Another thing-
I had to replace the heater hose, and it kept on leaking coolant after I had tightened it and everything. It also looked like my temp. sensor was leaking coolant as well. So the car sat for a month until my uncle came to help me fix it- turned out the clamp on the heater hose wasn't even on the metal inside the hose, and it was shooting coolant at the temp sensor...

Oh well :-)

Man this thread reminded me of a few years back, i had a 88 GXL i sold to this guy for $2000.....he couldnt drive a stick if his life depended on it. he was out racing one night and messed up on a shift. well he called me crying that he thinks he blew the engine, so i go to where the car was parked and the engine cranks right up but i hear a clanking noise and he showed me a piece of metal that he thought came out of the exhaust. he thought it was a piece of one of the rotors. i was like damn you messed this car up. well, i told him i would buy the car back for 300 he gladly signed the title back over to me. i went to the junk yard and got another drive shaft for $40 and drove it straight home.....now this is possibly the stupidest short term FC owner on the planet. how is a blown engine going to crank right up. oh well i was $1640 richer that had his baby back!!!

i got a good one

1. hmm.. stupidest thing ive done... bought a TII for a daily driver... hahaha

2. how bout this..... decided to not cover my UIM while working on my fuel rail and it just so happened that something found its way down into my front rotor housing... blew my front rotor... and to think i turn 18 next sat....
but i guess my dad felt bad enough for me (i LIVED under the hood of my car) and is going to dish out a loan to rebuild my engine via BANZAI RACING

3. ressurecting my 80' SA rx-7 out of my lawn (STILL FOR SALE GUYS!!!) to haul me around while my car is in the shop... i have an rx-7 as a backup for my other rx-7... its just like having a flat spare in your trunk...
