$6000 to burn what do you do?

I am going to pour some money into my 86 turbo engine/ trans/ diff swap

I have a koyo rad, greddy fmic, 500 primaries and 720 secondaries, rtek 1.7, act clutch, rb aluminum flywheel, stock s5 turbo, walbro 255 and a streetport.

Tokico blues, rb springs, and rb anti-sway bars.

Unfortunately my engine is blown.

Now I want to do something else engine wise.

Im looking for low 13s high 12s and I want to daily drive it.

What would you guys do?

I hear you. Fortunately I have a lil honda that I can't seem to kill so I'm covered as far as reliable transportation goes. It's just that as soon as spring comes I want something fast and nice to drive everyday.

As far as Rx7s go I already have 2, one with a 20b that's nearly done (but not quite a daily driver) and the one I am asking about.

Well if the engine is blown are you planning to start rotary or going boinger?

I remember a day when you would have been flamed within an inch of you internet life for even mentioning a boinger swap on this site.

With that said, that is exactly what I intend.

I just want to review my options before I financially commit myself.

If that's the case, i would go with an LS motor, and possibly some upgrades to it, after you get your subframe and ECU to run the V8.

Personally i would upgrade your turbo and go standalone ecu. and pay for a really good tune.

Engine swap.

$6k.

Pull that **** out and put something better in.

I am not a big fan of the whole concept but it does happen. I dont know how your local junk yards work...but if I were doing a boinger I would go to the local pull a part/pick n pull and grab a full engine harness, sensors and ecu on the cheap. Possibly a engine and transmission if it looks to be worth a rebuild. Around here thats less then $500. Leaving plenty of money for a new set of internals, bigger injectors, cam, ecu flash, and maybe even a snail .

if you already have a mostly finished 20B project, put that $6000 in the bank. How can you justify spending it on another Rx-7 project car? That's just irresponsible, unless you really are wealthy (high assets low debt).

6K is pushing it for a V-8 swap.
Sure, it can be done but you'd better hope all the stars align just right and nothing is wrong with your replacement engine/tranny combo.

The incidentals will nickel and dime you to death, so be prepared for lots of seemingly trivial expenses that can blindside you if you're not careful.

Physically installing the motor and transmission is straightforward (I assume you'll be using a kit)- especially in the second gen bay (much less relocating necessary compared to the more cramped third gen), it's the electrical that seems to trip up most folks.
The necessary wiring changes are fairly well documented but the expense to do it properly can come as a surprise.
Assuming you have all the major components and do the work yourself, wiring supplies alone will probably reach (and may exceed) $500.

Doubling your power will also quickly expose any chassis weaknesses you may have.
Figure on completely renovating the rear end (bushings, etc.) if not upgrading to a stouter diff unit altogether.
People seem OK with Turbo limited slip units up to about 450-500HP but a lot depends on how the car is driven.

Finally, there is the radical alteration in the way the car feels.
Clearly, the extra HP makes a big difference- and the extra torque, even more- but really, I thought the biggest change was the transmission.

Honestly, after dealing with a slick Japanese transmission, the T-56 six-speed- probably the most populars unit to use- feels like Soviet farm equipment.
Basically, it's crap, IMO.
Our transmission was a brand new, never before installed unit too, not a rebuild/used part, so I'm assuming that's as good as it gets for a T-56.
Could be wrong...

After driving our swapped third gen, the transmission alone has caused me to rethink my plans for a swap.
You might want to look into a Nissan/Toyota swap- not as well documented or supported- but very doable and you get a far better transmission with the package.

6000 is not really enough for a complete swap, cuz like clokker said, you will be facing a lot of "here and there" thats going to cost you a lot more.

Like I got this kinda pos FC couple months ago (hey if you're reading this, it is kinda pos lol), so far its almost 1/2 year and I already spent over 4K in parts. just to get it back to the "I feel safer to drive it" status. Seats still broken, gonna buy a new set of stock seat one day, ahh, need to repaint the whole shell. ahhhhh ....

Finish the 20b car. What do you mean starting another car? You have a daily and a fast 7. Why hamper that by trying to have two in one?
