$400 NA smoking problem

Today I found a `91 NA automatic for $400. i forgot to check the milage but its black and in good condition. the interior is clean as hell and the only exterior problems are a couple of scratches, a dent in the pass. fender, and a cracked taillight. I talked to the guy and he said that the car starts and runs but "smokes like a dog" He thinks its because it needs new apex seals but i dont kno and i dont kno if he really does. but what do you think the problem could be and how much would it be to fix. I think ima get it no matter what because i figure i could part it out for about that price but i just wanna see if its worth keeping instead of the `86 NA i have now.

What color is the smoke, does it always smoke, or just at first? do a compression check. I live in Stockton, if it's not to far from here i could check it out with you. But like you said for $400 can't really go wrong as long as it's not stolen. The **** part is that it's a automatic If you decide to pass on it PM me, I would not mind a S5 N/A for that price, I want a SCCA car some day. Tranny swap required here of course

The way i see it. Even if is 400 the repair could add up quick and even faster if you want to do a manuel swap. So if you add all engine and tranny up it might be cheaper to buy a manuel 7 thats doesn't smoke.

Don't canabalize it! I will buy the thing whole, and let it live another day.

As for you that say it's cheaper to find one running; not if you can do the work yourself. Full rebuild of the motor $900, tranny swap $400. Find me a series 5 N/A with a brand new rebuilt motor in perfect running condition, clean inside & out for ... $1700. Not gonna happen.

ok. i went and checked out the car again and started it. it smoked but it wasnt that dark. and it did it as soon as it started. it hadnt been started in over a year and we could only get it to start for a couple of seconds before it died and the dude that was helpin me put some gas in somewhere i couldnt hear what he was sayin. but it sounded ok when i accelerated. we think it was just out of gas. i talked to the guys before and they said it would smoke for like 5 min at idle and then quit but when they drove it would do it again. i found a couple little things in the interior but the guy said i could have it for $300 jsut so he doesnt have to look at it. o ya it smelled a lillte gassy to me but he said it was oil. whats it sound like???
