nice3, beginning of this thread you were saying nothing would fit, that looks pretty good- they fit in the car too?

FirebirdSlayer666 03-23-11 05:41 PM

Nice! Can't wait to retrofit the FC now that I see how well the Mini D2S fits in the housing. Have to get it running first though

Rob XX 7 03-23-11 06:55 PM

I have to say they look neater then another set of lights I recently seen for fcs

Yea it fits on the car but it looks like it only has maybe 1cm of clearance between the back of the d2s connector and the frame. I had to take a hole saw and cut the back out of the housing to move the projector far enough back so it wouldn't hit the front lens of the housing.

Rob XX 7 03-23-11 07:13 PM

did you see the pictures of the other lights in the group buy? pictures must be deceiving but they look so much larger then yours

The projector that they are using (fx-r) is 1/2 inch longer so they are a little bigger. I'm almost positive that they are having an issue with it hitting the frame that's why they are trying to find spacers to put between the housing and headlight bucket.

I cant see them fitting, 1/2" is alot. with another 1/2" I cant see the black plastic fitting over the headlight either, the shroud that covers the sides of the lights when they are up so you dont see the mechanism

I was wondering why they didnt use the smallest retro kit?

turboIIrotary 03-23-11 07:33 PM

I guess it depends on preference they like the fx'r because of the cutoff and foreground limiter it has which makes the light appear further into the distance. On the other hand i like the mini d2s because beam uniformity and more foreground light but then again i can mod my mini and put a limiter on it and so on.

Rob XX 7 03-23-11 07:41 PM

when I was talking to the retro fit guys they also said something about slightly less output, but if they dont fit what good is really large lights know what im saying?

turboIIrotary 03-23-11 07:48 PM

I think the output is the same but i think they are reffering to the foreground lighting that the minis have. This will cause your pupils to get smaller resulting in not seeing the light further down the road. This can be solved by putting a foreground limiter into the mini which take about 5 minutes to do.

Rob XX 7 03-23-11 07:50 PM

i dont remember the exact terminology, I have the email at work

after seeing your lights I am going to do mine, debating buying another set of lights so that I can take my time but it aint like im driving my car at night anytime soon

Rob XX 7 04-22-11 04:32 PM

im waiting on different shrouds, but I think I can offer a good group buy kit in the under $500 shipped range.
Will post pictures when its complete, TRUE plug and play, no cutting required, lights themselves would install in about 5 minutes. NO spacers, no brackets, it would be as easy as a h4 conversion installation

Rob XX 7 04-23-11 10:19 AM

no body filler, no spacers, no spray paint.
Modified my 12 year old h4 conversion housings, probably pick up a new set of housings without the word ADJURE on them.
Just have to put the shroud around the projectors, dont like the shroud I ordered, and butyl the lenses back onto the housings.

thanks to everyone in this thread for the brainstorming

Looking good how close is the projector to the front lens?
What shroud did you go with?
What did you use to move the projector further back? I used a pvc end cap and cut a hole in it then epoxied it back in.

Rob XX 7 04-23-11 02:45 PM

I used nothing, dropped them in. They are just clearing the lenses, but I plan on installing a small shim/spacer between the glass and the housing if the HID guys say to give the projector more space then what it has now. I will have my plastic guy cut it on the cnc machine from something or have my metal guy cut it from alum on his cnc machine, but it would be less then 1/4 needed if anything. NO CUTTING of the car required

I accidentally ordered the appolo shrouds because it was the default, wayyyyyyy to large. Im not sure what shroud I am going with, you can barely see the shrouds in there anyhow

reger 04-23-11 04:21 PM

Looks good guys. I think I was way overthinking this whole thing, you guys have a much better idea. I chopped the whole back of the housing off and was going to epoxy it on. I love the idea of the pvc cap after cutting out the original mounting point. Glad I got a couple sets of ebay housings, I'm going to try another set.

I guess all housing's are not made equally then i know the pilot sport and the ebay housing's don't fit with just dropping the projector in.

Rob XX 7 04-23-11 05:22 PM

I need like 1/8", I can probably just butyl it back together but I am going with the spacer but on the lens, this way its a simple drop it procedure.

I have to do Roan's FD lights so I will see how simple I can keep that conversion too

chatchie 04-23-11 07:08 PM

For some reason I think yours look better than the "other" $800 option. Nice job.

just startn 04-23-11 11:32 PM

Nice rob. I figured you would come up with a drop in, no cutting required, not hacked up headlight.

reger 04-24-11 01:15 AM

rob, if you develop a spacer before I finish mine, I would be interested in purchasing a pair.

Rob XX 7 04-24-11 12:13 PM

it was thanks to the conversations in this thread and alot of research then it was just putting it together. I would have done it a while ago but with the car in storage and constant snow on the ground it was not on my priority list.

It took me longer on the first light leaving it in front of a double halogen work light one side at a time, second light I just went at it with a heat gun and separated the housing ( I have no oven and work ) and honestly I cant see putting a light in the oven when a heat gun does the job in like 2 minutes with the help of a 90 degree dental pick. when I put them back together it will be with the same adhesive that held them together the first time.

I can close it up now but I think I will want a little bit more space so thats where my lens spacer comes to play, we know there is a bit of room in front of the lights in our cars, but there is little room behind. It will be in there firm and as-stock, no removal of anything else except to make your ballast mounting and wiring- which would be needed for any HID install, even the $39 ebay ones.

Reger- I am going to order another set of housings to confirm my spacer will work with other brands, but it would be easy enough for either of regular vendors to adjust the template once they have it.

I also have miata, lexus, subaru ones

Ok back on topic now, are you using housing's with glass or plastic lenses?

Rob XX 7 04-24-11 06:15 PM

right now I have glass, these were my existing h4 conversion housings I had, nothing is sealed up I can swap them out to another housing.

you using plastic or glass? with plastic I bet I can put a small bubble in the lens for clearance and eliminate a spacer but I think it will look goofy
