What should i do?

So I have a little problem here. We had a little party for me, because I just graduated high school. A lot of my family was there and many of my older friends who are married and have kids. My older friends are really hardcore car enthusiasts. And I was talking about getting an FC, because I wanted one since the 7th grade. This kid’s father a few blocks away had a nice black turbo 2. I wanted to buy a nice n/a for a semi daily, because I have pontiac grand prix I use to go to work and etc ,but I’m kind of getting bored with Pontiac and I want a five speed.

So we get to talking about cars and my friend who is a Honda guru told me he can build me a nice 89 honda hatch or a crx to fool around with and it will make a good transitional car toward the FC. He said he can build me a hatch/ crx for less than 1,000 and then another 500 for a t3/t4 turbo set up, if I want more power and get rid of the Pontiac and use hatch that for a daily diver. He’s not one of those guys that use cheap ebay parts. He works at a dealership and can get me legit parts super cheap.

He started to tell me about his friend that has a 460 hp civic that running a big turbo. We go over his house and he gives me a ride in the civic and for some reason the civic didn’t really impress me. It was fast no doubt and I had a slight grin on my face when we hit boost, but I didn’t care too much for it. So he was asking me how I did I like it and I straight told him it was fast, but not that impressive. I told him about the bridgeported FC I got a ride in. Then some random dude that was there asked me, do you really want to rebuild a motor every 1500 miles? Then he said you don’t want to have you car at rotary performance 5 times a month and that **** pissed me off. I said rotaries can be reliable if you know what you doing; sure they cost you a lot to maintain. He‘s like you can build yourself a fast Honda cheaper than the rx7 and destroy an rx7 , but buy this time I made it clear I don’t want to waste time trying to build a Honda that has 400 hp. A little 150+ hp daily driver civic sure, but 400 +hp, no.

But what I really want to know is, should build the hatch/crx and gain experience driving standard or should I get an N/A FC practice driving 5 speed?

-Matt

um, **** honda.
all biased oppinions asside, hows garland? i grew up in the dallas areas, was born in plano.
but, back on subject. **** honda, if you really want a rx7, freakin get one. i got my first one (rip mistress) i bought it for 1000, it barelly ran, i tore it down to the block, redid all the seals, all the vacuum lines, new clutch, thing ran like a charm. im now on to my 13b half bridge port n/a drift car/DD.
so, if you want a rx7, get one, dont listen to lame excuses about how honda would a transistion, from crap to crap to rx7? that makes no sense.
ya, im an automotive technician with an EXTREME bias against gm, chrystler, and ford.

If you are going to do the work yourself, 7. If you are going to have someone else do the work go for a honda. If you're like a lot of us on the forum, you'll end up with a 7.

I like my Civic, but I love my FC. Honestly in my opinion a Civic is better for a daily driver, but if you want to build something, get the RX7.

wait on the 7 til u got some mechanical skills... since ur planin to mod whatever car u get... stick with the grand prix for a while. u should never have the rush to jump into other cars if ur only options are either an old honda or 7...

if ur into real sports cars, those hondas should never be an option... they are not the ideal drivetrain layout. cheers!

A Honda is a freaking useless car. People that are progressing as car enthusiasts usually build them to satisfy their F&F needs. In the end you have a "fast" car that is boring as hell to drive. Built to impress others with no attention paid to pleasing its driver.

I have a friend that built an LS-V EG with a 60-1/9.0 compression that put down 330whp @ 11psi. Car weighs 2400lbs...It ******* hauls ***. Still boring...you can't drag race with the skinny tires up front and you'll probably blow the axles. You can't highway race because the car feels like a go kart at 140mph+ and you can't autocross because the turbo is too laggy. He sold it and bought a 300ZX.

Thanks for the help guys. Garland is a little different. It's mostly dominated buy the Hispanics. The reason i started to think about is, my bother in law said i should start out with a fwd car and gain experience and my friend chimed in on it too. They also tried to talk me out from getting the rx7. I've been reading this forum 2-3 hours a day for 3 years. I'm ready for an fc. I'm doing all the work my self. i plan on building a t60-1 street port engine myself down the road. I'll probably mess it up, but hey you go to learn some where right? And if i need major help i'll have Ari at rp and the huge rx-7 crowed in dallas ,tx.

Hypertek, your so right when you said the rx7 is a ture sports car. I've been in a couple of them, including the fd and there's nothing like them. KhanArtisT, your so right about honda being a useless car i figured that out in the 5th grade, lmao. You should had seen the driver of that civic when i told him his civic was ok. I didn't mean to destroy the guys pride and joy, but i was just being real with him. I just told him the t70 bp Fc rode in pull so much harder then his civic and kept traction, lol. It was just a boring car no matter how fast it was, just was boring. Once again guys, thanks for your input and hopefully by the end of summer/ early fall when i find the right FC, i'll post pic her on here!

nothing like driving a 7... make sure you have the "ends" for your 7 (if you get one)... be patient with it and don't look back! it will be worth it in the end. fair warning though. oh yeah one more thing, you may think you know everything about the rotary until you really own on. Reading about it is only half the work, working on the rotary is the other half. Trust me... reading 3 years about the rotary before i owned one is only 10 percent of what i know now after owning my RX7 for 3 years.

your class of 09 just like me. ive been on this forum since i was 14 years old. To answer your question yes you should get the fc and gain experience from that. Ive had 2 hondas in the past year a 2000 civic si and a 93 accord i only got to enjoy the si for 2 days before it got stolen that is a major concern all honda owners have. and as for the accord there were so many minor problems but i think working on the fc is way easier then working on a honda. the fc has so much space in the engine bay. and if you want to mod your car the forum is right here. FYI N/A rx7s arent expensive to maintain its a different story though if your talking about turbo rx7s.

That's so true! I just think its time to apply what i've learned so far.

Thats awesome! Have you graduated yet? I know in cali every thing is few weeks late compared to texas. I'm going turbo wayyyyyy down the road.I need a better job first and to worry about college( just started today). The fc primarily going to be a semi dd and a autocross car.

Lmao, i just couldn't wait to be apart of this club! I was going to wait till i get a fc, but there hard to find.... well in good condition, so i'm still on the hunt. I was going to buy a shell, but i'm going to save up anther 1000-1500, then buy a nice running one. After i got a ride in that bp fc, i went home and made an account, lol

If you have the time and patience, get the FC, you won't regret it. Just be careful what you do to it, cause you might regret alot of aftermarket "upgrades."

Mine's been a pain in my *** since day 1, but wouldn't trade it for anything!

buy both.

i have an FC for a project car, an 02 acura TL that i drive to work (and am trying to sell). once the TL sells im buying a 92-95 civic 4 door, 5 speed...ill throw some rota's on it, and some cheap ground control coilovers...and thats about it....it will be uber reliable, cheap as hell to maintain, and easily get 38-45mpg. if i ever wanted to do a swap....B20 vtec's can be put together for $1500...easy 180 whp, and the car will still get 30+mpg.

civic are great for getting good MPG, and being ultra reliable...2 things an FC will never beat a civic at.

civic's are cheap to build, and can be fast...but they get boring really fast, and feel cheap when you get behind the wheel of a RWD or AWD car.

if you dont know anything mechanically...get a civic.

Only AutoX pics I could find right now, and ones a WRX...

P.S. My 100+hp FC was 1.75 seconds faster than my buddies WRX pushing 278whp, sti springs, and tires twice as expensive as mine. And he's an instructor for Master Drive, showin power can't beat perfect engineering :-)

Damn, good stuff! Can't wait till my first auto cross event. But i might have to put the fc on the back burner for a while. College is starting to get expensive, lol. I thought i had this all planed out, but i guess not. A valuable lesson i've learned is, things don't go the way you plan. Hopefully i can get this new job that pays $15 an hour and ditch this b/s minimum wage job i have now. Anyways, i appreciate the picture!

If you get the civic, you'll wish you had gotten the 7. If you get the 7 you'll be glad you didn't get the civic.

very very wise - and ownership of an RX-7 proves that over and over again. My advice is when you buy the "working, good condition" FC - have another $1,000 ready immediately after you buy the car. I'm on my 3rd RX-7 and this is the first time I did it "right" - I struggled financially with my first two RX-7's because I was like most kids in college... poor. Save up, work on your studies, and if you can get the 7 get it - but don't make it the focus of your life, college is freaking awesome and once it's over - it's over for good.

You hit the nail on the head with that quote. Speaking of things that don't go the way you planned, yesterday i had to replace my ponitac's heater core.
