And in looking up that article I found out why my Mom's 1993 Toyota Pickup lacks the light.
My 1986 GXL is so early that the coolant reservoir is on the driver's side near the Leading Ignition Coil. Manufactured in October 1985. It has the Center brake light.
If you have inspections in your state, you may not pass like that... Plus, see the link above where it states that the likelihood of being rear ended is a bit lower.
I think there were a lot of cost cutting measures like the S5 Viscous differential versus the S4's clutch pack type. The lack of an LSD in some S5 models where the S4 had it... (GXL, I think)

*high five* My Sport is like that too. I'll likely transfer the reservoir over to my base though once it starts getting built up, since the sport is in such sorry shape .. It's nice not having a coolant reservoir in the way of various heat exchangers and whatnot .

We're like... twin red s4 brothers or something. Comradery.
I'm loving the amount of info we're getting from this thread. I had no idea about the Euro spec s4 tails being different, the center brake light being USDM, and the coolant reservoir on early 86's being near the ignition coils. Keep the odd info coming!
Thanks for posting pictures of yours, I love learning that sort of stuff. And of course seeing your stock wheels was cool too since those specific wheels didn't make it to the US market. Post pictures of more Australian s4's!

With reference to a brochure I have from England, EuroSpec S5 tails are also different in that one of the back up light lenses (passenger side) is red. Only the drivers side is clear. Couldn't guess why.

New EuroSpec RX8 Tails
Getting way off S4 subject, but speaking of EuroSpec tails, these are what's new with the 2010 model RX8 according to here: http://www.worldcarfans.com/10907242...ced-for-europe

The red one is a rear fog light. That's also what the 2 little red squares are in the S4 ones. I like the US spec better, the S4's are cleaner and the S5's are symmetrical.

I'm also likeing the RX-8 facelift with the LED tail lamps. But the Euro-specs aren't any different than the US spec ones. The fog is in the bottom of the bumper for those.
Hey Yence, I'll trade you my US spec S4 tails for your Euro spec tails!

Yeah its good to know info on our vehicles from diff countries
Wish i had the centre caps for the stock wheels, The importer put them on to get it over the pits/licenced as my rims have to much offset front to back (never gave them back as got screwed so i kept em for all the hassles).
Will take pics with my other rims when get tyres as they got destroyed/fryed

@FirebirdSlayer666: you are right, the foglight is always on the side of the actual driver.
I would trade, but in the Netherlands we're not allowed to run small 'us style' license plates
