Proud New Owner/First Post!!
Hello everyone, my name's Nick.
I just today bought a '91 Rx-7, 62,000 miles, for $500!!
I'm so excited to get working on it, but I need all the help I can get. I've been reading around on here lately since I first knew about the car, but since I bought it today I decided to register finally. The car needs only a fuel pump, battery, maybe alternator (If this one decides to die), and the stereo was stolen (but thats no biggy), and the roguh one, all new brakes. I've wanted a project car since I was 13 and first started looking at imports, Rx-7's always being one of my favorites. 6 years later( 3 days before my b-day might I add), I have my project sitting in front of my house, ready to be worked on!
Ill have pictures up ASAP.

Thats a REAL good deal! Congrats!
Fuel pump is easy, i just did mine a few days ago, got it at pepboys for $120. installe was easy, just pull up the carpet in the trunk, unscrew the covering plate with the wires going through it, push the groment through it. Then unscrew the fuelpump from the tank. Pull it all out, and follow the instructions on the new pump to reinstall. Took me about 20 mins to do it.
Battery is easy as well, just pick up a new one, i also just got one, i got mine at Sams for $60 and a 9 year prorated waranty and 3 year replacement. Though i didn't get the stock size battery, i got a size 34 i think it was. It was the most powerful battery they had and just happened to fit PERFECT.
Should be able to get those replaced in an afternoon at the tops. Then spend the rest of the day checking it out to get it running.

And follow that before you try to start it, i did and with just a little work mine started right up after sitting for 2 years.

No problem, i have been getting tons of help getting my car running, the least i can do is pass on what i know.
I just took my first test drive in mine that i also got for $500 (though it is an S4 87, not an S5 like yours). I am so excited about it, it is even better than i thought it would be!

I guess that is the S5 NA manual then? since his is an S5 but auto?
Also, i have heard differnt things, is redlining (as in all the way to 8K) bad, ok or good for these engines?
I have heard all 3 from differnt places and don't know what to think. My instink is that it is bad for the engine.

Same as all other engines. If a rotary is well maintained and running in good order they handle high RPM better than your average Ford Focus motor. There's a myth that your supposed to redline it every drive cycle... I think that's BS. I guess me not redlining my GXL every day is why it has lasted 149,000 miles on the original engine and still runs great and gets 21 MPG...

Where can I get the right bezel? and I've also heard that RX-7s are easy to convert to manual, even made for it. I know it's def a 91, by the serial number. I've got pics of the engine too, which its covered in salt build up, but missing part of the intake...someone stole that out of the car too.

ur dash has probably been apart from the looks of it so it might have more miles than u think. ur motor looks like mine and mine has 29600 miles. and runs on 1 rotor.

Yea it looks like the gauges have definitely been messed with so the miles might not be accurate.
Rotaries are SUPPOSED to be revved to keep carbon build up away. If it has been properly maintained and cared for in no way will it hurt it. I believe it says in the manual to redline them frequently!!!

S5's:
N/A 5-speed redlines at 8k - tach goes to 9k.
n/a Auto redlines at 7k - tach goes to 8k.
TurboII redlines at 7k - tach goes to 8k.
My car has an N/A gauge cluster with an S5 TurboII tach.

All S5 automatics had the same 7k redline. If your car is an automatic you have the correct guages... Only the S5 NA Manual cars have the 9k tach with 8k redline. S5 NA Autos have the same red line as S5 T2 cars so if your gonna do a turbo swap you won't have to worry about changing your tach at all.

That's pretty respectable for a 149,000 mile 13b. Similar to a V6.
27 MPG on a rotary is just a freak engine, lol.
