new air box (thanks to RotaryRocket88)
I got the design from RotaryRocket88 in this thread. So, design credit goes to him.
Mine didn't turn out quite as nice as his, but it works (I guess). Since I have an N/A, I had to relocate the hole and since it's an S5, I had to put insulation around the inside of the hole instead of just screwing the maf to the box. I probably could/should have made the hole lower, but I think it's ok. The metal is .016" aluminum.
Before:
After:
I had a mazda emblem laying around, so I stuck it on the top panel.
I had removed my windshield washer container, so I used some heater hose to make a scoop.
Here's what I used for insulation:
for search purposes: cai, cold air intake, cold air box

Nice! That turned out great. I figured it wouldn't be too hard to make my original shape work on an NA.
I've been logging air intake temps (along with lots of other things) on mine in the last few days with my Rtek, and the temps look pretty good overall. I'm probably going to line the inside of the box with some dynamat type material to insulate it. When sitting in traffic, the metal can heatsoak a little. But as far as temps at cruising, they're typically not much more than ambient, so that's good.

I might use the rest of my insulation tape on the box. Would it be better to line the inside or the outside? or would I need a different kind of tape for that?
I'm also curious to know if my air scoop is as functional/beneficial as it looks.

I was thinking of using something like this: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku. Dynamat is normally for sound deadening, but it also reflects heat. I'm sure sticking it on the outside would be best, but it would also be pretty ugly. I'll be putting mine on the inside, where it can't be seen.
