NE My new-to-me 1990 RX-7 Convertible

I attempted posting this in the 'new member' section and it has now been 4 days, but since i've posted enough, i'll just post it here.

Hello everyone,

Just here introducing myself as I may be asking a bunch of questions about fixing the 13B rotary engine in the '90 RX-7 Convertible i just purchased for $250, or maybe even questions about what people are looking for on these cars as i may end up parting it out if its TOO expensive to fix.

I'm normally a Chevy guy... hence my website being all about my 1975 Nova LN edition that i've sunk a TON of money into.... the website hasn't been updated in many many years.

I purchased this:
http://2010.ChevyNovaLN.com/rx7/

My thoughts are maybe see if the engine can be repaired for as cheap as possible and maybe drive it around this summer with the intention of selling it... OR.. keep it depending on whether the wife lets me haha. OR, i'll part it out to make a little $$, but I was NOT going to pass it up for $250. I'm also looking for a decent used NA engine i could drop in and use.

I'm in Omaha, Nebraaska, 29 years old, and I work in I.T. on a 14-person 'server team' that supports over 1200 windows / ESX servers and 5000+ desktops so 'tinkering' is in my blood. I love computers/cars more than most everything else (save for the wife) and will ultimately end up doing whatever she 'allows' me to do with this RX-7, but she did say it looks like fun. Problem is, we havea 2 car garage and currently 3.. now 4 cars.

Anywho, let me know your thoughts on the Rotary engine, or direct me to the correct forum page for that question as i JUST joined and haven't had much of a chance to dig through anything yet.

Thanks!!

Whoa, I have a disco nova as well. A '78 that I've had since I was 15. And I recently added a 1990 rx7 vert to my collection. Mines black on black and is a low mileage car. Yours looks REALLY nice! I'm guessing it has a blown engine based on the price and questions. It's actually not that hard to find a rotary if you're looking for one. Maybe someone has an NA sitting in the back of their garage after a TII swap that they can sell you. You have an S5, so try to find an 89-91 engine so everything interchanges without too much of a headache. You can get a "crate" rebuilder rotary from several rotary shops for around 1800 or so. You can rebuild what you have depending on your skillset and knowledge. You can also get a JDM import engine from a number of outfits that specialize in low mileage engines coming over from Japan.

Good luck!

Haha. Thats great! I love my Disco.. I've just got SOOOO much going on with it that i need a project I can 'finish' like the RX-7. My wife gave me the go-ahead to spend damn near $18k on it a few years ago so i've got a TON of parts to go into it, all drivetrain related mostly, which is why on the RX-7 she said 'no' at first.... and then after I told her how cheap it was and that losing money on it is next to impossible unless it burns to the ground somehow, she said yes... with one caveat. I can't spend more on it than I could get out of it if i were to sell it. So, Cheap engine (which i'm finding is an oxymoron) is my main objective so I can drive it around in the summer and then see how I feel about it. (whether or not to re-sell).

The picture of it in my garage ... is.. well my brother's garage. No room at my place lol. The other rule she gave me... find a place to put it.

Hopefully once I get it running she'll be more open to having it at our place during the summer. Looks like it'd be a fun car. I just need to lose a little weight cuz as it sits... i'm a 'little' wider than the room between the door and the console, but i DO fit..... maybe this is my motivation. lol

Are you on Steve's Nova Site? I've been on there forever. Rx7club comes and goes as I own rex's. I've had 3 of them now.

Here's my disco.

Looks like a great buy on a very clean looking 'Vert shell, even if the engine needs to be replaced. Welcome to the forum.

A good place to start if you haven't done this already is to read through the FAQs at the top of the Second Gen section:

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/frequently-asked-questions-2nd-generation-rx-7-faq-fc-494667/

Among other things, you'll find links for downloading the FSM for your car which will probably be indispensible if you don't have one already. Here's the link for the S5 manual:

http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1989_1991/

You can also find the wiring diagram there, as well as downloadable parts fiches so you can look up part numbers of anything you need.

After that, do some searching because nearly every issue you will have has been discussed before. Plus if you're new, the old members will delight in yelling "Search Noob!" at you.

Enjoy your car. I hope your wife lets you keep it!

if you need a surround for your dash gauge cluster i think i have one for an airbag car like that...

I will be down near omaha at MAM (mid america motorplex) at the end of the month with both my FCs playing on the road course...

Could hand it right to you if you stop by there...

What were you thinking price-wise? I actually will be getting the surround from the seller (my co-worker) as he just recently removed it due to his wifes identical RX-7 having its delay wiper switch stop 'delaying' and only had 1 or 2 speeds... (i think thats how he described it), so i'll be getting the piece back minus a fully working wiper switch.

Does yours work?

I'm at a point where i mainly just need to find a working engine before spending money on cosmetics/features (like switches) becuase if I can't get an engine reasonably priced, i probably wont end up keeping the car. Wife has to be happy with it... and driving it is a must to seal that deal haha.

Would love to meet up if it works out.

Brian
