"modernized" my tails today
Set the oven at 200* and just gave them a few minutes here and there to pull the lenses off the housings. Used a razor knife to help cut through the glue to aid in removal. Everything worked out fine. Of course, being 21 yrs old, they were real brittle. I did crack a place or two, but you'd never know by looking at them, and they are still better than the lenses of the lights that were on the car.
Heres the pics

diffusers that were removed:
Im happy with the results and will be selling the other set of s5 lights if anyones interested. PM me if so, otherwise check the classifieds

Man I love modernized tails. I left the black piece in but covered it with smooth black plastic. I figured why take out the dimpled diffusers and leave the dimpled black plastic. I think it helps smooth it out. Mine dont leak : )

yeah it looks really good man. i recently purchased the s5 tails with plans to do the same thing and then tint them, but i found a set for $120 and purchased them and they have a crack on the left side. I am very sceptic about doing it because im afraid that i wont be able to get them back together because of the crack....so i may end up just buying a new left side. but it will be done one day. i assure you.

between the two of you, why dont one of you buy the left and one buy the right? $100 shipped each? ...but only if you both agree
the left is near mint, the right has a crack on the red portion but the corner is in great condition.

im to scared im going to **** them up if i take them apart.. would a heatgun work too insted on the oven?

I used a heatgun, then once apart adhesive remover to remove all the old silicone ($2) and locktite silicone ($3) to reseal them.
camera is at home... all I have is crappy cell pics.. I'll post some tonight.
Or come up for our Tues night meet at Starbucks and see them!

Here are mine at night... the corners are painted because of severe damage that I repaired.

IMO, using the oven is so much easier. With the heat gun you got to make sure its heated all the way around, and if you stay at one spot too long itll melt your lens.
Set the oven to 250 degrees for like 7-10 min, then it'll just pull apart.
My $0.02
And hypertek's LED conversion is the shizzle! I just thought of something, if some of us didnt want to cover the inner LEDS, they have 4" white LED reverse lights. Then you wouldnt have to split them apart/remove the red lens. I dont know what they would look like shining through 2 lenses instead of one.
Some one should try it.
