"modernized" my tails today
Set the oven at 200* and just gave them a few minutes here and there to pull the lenses off the housings. Used a razor knife to help cut through the glue to aid in removal. Everything worked out fine. Of course, being 21 yrs old, they were real brittle. I did crack a place or two, but you'd never know by looking at them, and they are still better than the lenses of the lights that were on the car.
Heres the pics BEFORE: http://altomo.info/~kenny/images/RX7/River_002x.jpg AFTER: http://altomo.info/~kenny/images/RX7/modern_002.jpg http://altomo.info/~kenny/images/RX7/modern_001.jpg diffusers that were removed: http://altomo.info/~kenny/images/RX7/modern_003.jpg Im happy with the results and will be selling the other set of s5 lights if anyones interested. PM me if so, otherwise check the classifieds |
ya man looking nice bro... about to do this to mine within the next couple weeks
|
now go water your car and make sure they dont leak...
I left that black piece in there. im not a fan of the removed defusers on stock tails with standard bulbs, just looks weird to me.. Id perfer the lense in there... but thats just me.. i removed it all and went all out with leds |

I left the black in also. Took it out on the first one, looked at the light, then re-opened it to re-install it. Kind of a PITA, but was a free/fun weekend project. |
yah, just make sure you seal em up real good hahha.. thats what i hated about doing em.. you set em up and the first time they see water, you see they leak. lol.. I had to just seal the whole things up with silicone adhesive.
|
Man I love modernized tails. I left the black piece in but covered it with smooth black plastic. I figured why take out the dimpled diffusers and leave the dimpled black plastic. I think it helps smooth it out. Mine dont leak : )
|
yeah it looks really good man. i recently purchased the s5 tails with plans to do the same thing and then tint them, but i found a set for $120 and purchased them and they have a crack on the left side. I am very sceptic about doing it because im afraid that i wont be able to get them back together because of the crack....so i may end up just buying a new left side. but it will be done one day. i assure you. :)
|
I'll sell you another set with a nice left side and a cracked right side, lol.
|
i need a nice drivers side orange corner lense , mine is cracked =p
|
between the two of you, why dont one of you buy the left and one buy the right? $100 shipped each? ...but only if you both agree
the left is near mint, the right has a crack on the red portion but the corner is in great condition. |
yo hypertek, you haz pics of the your lights, i have some friends who have done it, im planning on doing mines too with LED, i still wanna see how otheres look first.
|
old pic, i patched up a chip and repainted the black area recently
http://i34.tinypic.com/35mil8l.jpg i do got led license plate lights though.. the right side went out tho, i need to order another strip but i forgot where i got em from lol not as cool as this guy though http://carview-img02.bmcdn.jp/carlif.../609908/p2.jpg http://carview-img02.bmcdn.jp/carlif.../609908/p6.jpg he left the defuser lense inside.. i think its kinda cool because during the day they will look stock |
niiice, I THINK IMA GO LED!
|
|
I did the same thing -but with LED bulbs :icon_tup:
looks great! |
Sunburn Post some pics up i wander how the modernized lights would look with just LED bulbs not the light it self like hypertek used.
im to scared im going to fuck them up if i take them apart.. would a heatgun work too insted on the oven? |

im to scared im going to fuck them up if i take them apart.. would a heatgun work too insted on the oven? I used a heatgun, then once apart adhesive remover to remove all the old silicone ($2) and locktite silicone ($3) to reseal them. camera is at home... all I have is crappy cell pics.. I'll post some tonight. Or come up for our Tues night meet at Starbucks and see them! |
i like it
|
i think im going to do them! using a heatgun tho not the oven =]
i'll take the diffusers out and replace the bulbs with LEDs i seen some that open up like a flower once they are inside the sokcket |

|

hey guys, I'm selling the set of s5's I had on the car in the "before" pics up above.
$200 for the COMPLETE set including the tag bracket, lights, and harnesses. |
IMO, using the oven is so much easier. With the heat gun you got to make sure its heated all the way around, and if you stay at one spot too long itll melt your lens.
Set the oven to 250 degrees for like 7-10 min, then it'll just pull apart. My $0.02 And hypertek's LED conversion is the shizzle! I just thought of something, if some of us didnt want to cover the inner LEDS, they have 4" white LED reverse lights. Then you wouldnt have to split them apart/remove the red lens. I dont know what they would look like shining through 2 lenses instead of one. Some one should try it. |
Can somone PM me and let me lnow where to buy the hypertek LED light conversion so i can do taht to my S5 tail's
