I've hear good things about having your coilovers built. And it only costs around 1k anyways. Take the Koni yellow cartridges, as they are great quality, weld them in to the stock casings, weld on spring perches, throw on some ground control coils, get camber plates...quite a few people on Hybrid Z have sworn by this setup, and on other forums too.

Most noobs don't care about the shock charts or anything...they just want less body roll and to "slam" their cars and have camber for wheels. haha sad but true

 

glad i posted lets get some more good type discussion on coil-overs maybe get in to more detail in setting up the coilover correctly cause with out a doubt i am yet to see even a local tuner shop install them correctly

I got a set of used Ohlins to replace my stock springs and Tokico Blues.

They removed a LOT of the cushy feeling that I didn't like in the FC. Made it feel a lot stiffer. Other than that, I don't know a thing about them and would like some info.

 

I contacted 2 more companies today.

BC Racing - had a very lengthy conversation.

Fortune Auto - had a lengthy email and convo.

Both are around the $1000 price. Fortunate advertises custom valving services in house, this sounds appealing.

BC guarantees quick delivery times. Very little backorder at most 2-3 weeks.

I have accounts with these three affordable companies.

All three offer external reservoir coilovers also for the more seriously minded.

BTW iv been using Stance GR+Pro for about 2.5 years now and has consistent reliability with it. Never had to uninstall it for any reason, its a quality made system. I cant say the same with Tein HP coilsovers which blew after 20 months of use, and i had to get it serviced once.

 

is that 2.5 years of street use, track use, what (also, road racing,drag, or drift). that would help. you haven't had ANY problems, not even rebuild yet? guess it depends on the abuse. I have been looking at the stance pro's to use on my daily/drifter using 8k/6k rates (as promoted by JTP in a drift setup thread here). REALLY interested in your feedback on these as everyone gives them good reviews but that long life is a BIG plus and selling point for me.

also, Megen street coilovers with 8k/6k. they seem okay for a cheap option on paper but are they gonna last a good amount of time in general? I've heard from people with other car's say they aren't very good. any input from the fc community?

 

something i've been looking for. post so i can come back. i figured, with the amount spent on some nice shocks and spring, only a little more and you can have coilovers. total newb in this department.

 

Those look like good way to go but I was reading a different thread where Tweak was saying that he has that style on his car and that he hates them because they make a clunking sound every time that he takes a corner hard or going over a speed bump. Is that a common problem with this style? Does any one else have that problem? Evil Aviator, do you run these on your car?

 

Yes that is common. Personally i hated these on my FC because it was difficult to find matched dampers.

To avoid the clunk get helper springs. If you get GC's don't expect to lower your car much for optimal performance.

Not sure if that will really matter. Your issue isn't going to be spring rates, which is what GC can basically offer. It's getting a matched damper for your desired spring rates.

So if you want stateside support then i would suggest Koni's so you can get them custom valved. 8200 series. Or custom valved Koni yellows. Not sure if that would be any cheaper than getting these though. Ground control might also be the place to contact for some Advance Design/GC setup.

In terms of a Japanese coilover offering this kind of service is almost just down to Tein now. You can get monoflex's and at the time of rebuild request custom valving for your desired change in spring rates.

The difference:
Koni 82xx and AD will give you independent rebound and compression adjustments but you will lose suspension travel the more you lower the vehicle.

Tein Monoflex will primarily adjust the rebound curve only. This one will not affect ride quality the more you lower the car. It uses a short stroke damper.

Cost difference, not so sure.

I have a similar setup on my 88 coupe. It is the Mazda Comp Stage II kit, which has Koni coilovers with Eibach ERS springs, camber/caster plates, Eibach sway bars, and stiff race bushings. Yes, it does clunk and groan when going over speed bumps, but the car is designed for performance rather than driving my grandmother to church.

If you are looking for a less-jarring ride, then you can bring it down a notch and use street/autocross-level parts like Illumina or AGX dampers with Eibach Pro-Kit progressive springs in the stock location and stock-hardness bushings.

 

I don't want to lower the car that much if at all. But I want to have it setup for autocross, I am in the STS2 class and they let you run coil overs. I don't care if it rides rough but I did not want it to make noise over every bump.

Well, I just wanted to add here my experience with Parts Shop Max coilovers. 10kg f/8kg r spring rates and a 10 click damper. also, the front top plates are diagonal so you adjust caster and camber at the same time. my car is a stock s4 sport model. been on them a little over a month.

I was surprised at how managable they are around town given the spring rates and notoriously stiff dampers. everyone says they aren't that bad and they are right. vermont roads are horrible and I have even taken them onto some dirt roads and it doesn't bother me too much. a little bumpy, not for VIP's. I have mine set to full soft for daily. it feels a lot more solid and stiff now but they are a little too stiff for auto cross I would think. they are aimed at the drift crowd and they are great for drift. I have messed around drifting on them a little in the past month and they are exactly what I want. I seem to have a very snappy style anyway and the stiffness gets my back end out quick which is how I drive (some people complain about snap oversteer but I like it as long as its managable). I have an open diff too so these are working for me.

if you drift and don't mind a little bumpy ride, these are great.

I have cuscos and haven't ran into any issues but they are pretty stiff ...I don't get the sounds over speed bumps and such

Just some info.
I've got Ksports on my cars. They're local so most of us in AZ tend to run them. Stance comes in second.

As a disclaimer, I have never owned or driven a car with super expensive fancy struts/springs. I can only say my car feels great on what I have.

I've got gen 1 Ksport Kontrol Pro's on my FC and they are about 5 years old and are still fine.
They've handled trips to Sevenstock, lots of drift events, and plenty of track days. Even some washboard dirt roads last month(22 miles of it). The spring rates are pretty stiff but good for road race.
Still running like champs.

I've also got Kontrol Pro's(gen 2) on my G35 sedan and the spring rates are much more plush but still feel great. Nothing jarring like the FC.

nice thanks for the link, those ISIS basic HR coilovers almost seem too cheap.... i wonder how they actually hold up , but thinking of getting those Ksports not a bad price

 

i have d2's on my s4 FC and i love em. i havent had any problems with them at all. and through tnrperformanceparts.com they have ksports, megans, and d2's on sale with free shipping.
