Lets see some Vert Aftermarket Headunit Installs

I believe I was sold the wrong adapter for replacing my stock Pioneer AE with a single din unit as I have roughly a half inch space on either side of the "installation kit" when mounted in my dash.........thinking about going and consulting the douchebag who told me it would fit or.....fabbing something to fill in these strips.
has anyone encountered this problem? my goal is to have a clean looking install so i am straying away from trying to fab something myself as I think it will look to puzzleie (not a word).
Are there kits that fill the whole opening left from the removal of the vert Pioneer AE system????
Lets see some pics of your guys stuff!! any suggestions are more than welcome and the sooner the better!!

mods... posted in 2nd gen as I find the audio section to be frequented more by fd people and this is 2nd gen specific audio

Here is my setup in my vert so far. I don't have a stereo in it yet. But the slot will fit a single din head unit perfectly. I plan to install a carputer with a 7 inch retractable screen head unit in that slot. I'm also planing on having my new Microtech hooked up to the carputer so fine tuning can be done at any time I please without having to have a laptop with me.

Ignore the SAFCII and greddy turbo timer in the pic. They are not there anymore.

I got the din bracket\guage pod from here.

All I know is the bracket I have for the 3 guages and single din slot fits any 2nd gen. It sounds like maybe you did get the wrong thing from BB. But take some pics so we can see what you mean. Check out that thread I linked you can get one of these there.

I will have a custom speaker enclosure available in a couple of weeks that you can purchase and you can put together like you would when you buy furniture that comes with the neat self assembly instructions.

I bought a kit for my 1991 convertible that came with 2 plastic spacers that are suppose to be installed on the sides. The install manual said I needed to install them but I don't need them because there is no space to fill. I was in an s1 the other day and it seemed that it may have been wider. I think there may have been a change from the s1 to the s2. You have an S1 so that would also make sense.

There is no difference between the differentnt cars the only prob is that like said above there are 2 plastic spacers that are needed in the vert (and a few others depending on which pioneer setup was orig) I just took the spacers off another cracked surround I had from an 86 3 screws I think hold it each side.
I went with a very stock look by finding a 'covy' from another car at the wreckers to fill the bottom space and with my Parrot Bluetooth Head UNIT (luv it) all is well. On a side note I was amazed at how easy the wiring etc. went wired the din to some spare plugs I had for quick removal. Even the Headrest controls wired and work perfect with no issues.

Vert, AE System, Headrest Volume

Tiers, and all,

I know the info I need is here somewhere, but I have been reading posts for hours, not sure I know the answer yet, and perhaps someone knows this info off the top of their head:

If I remove the headunit (cassette/CD ,auto antenna) and the AE System and put in a new head, it is possible to keep my headrest speakers and volume controls AND have room for a new cupholder?. My new headunit is the Dual XHD6425 with 4 speaker outputs and front and rear preamp outputs. I am sure I am over my head with this but I want to make sure it is done right.

In the recommended installations from the RXclub I will not be using the preamp outputs? Is that correct? I would just rather not go to Bestbuy and have someone do it their way. Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Art

I've been told that yes you can use your aftermarket headunit and still retain your OEM headrest speaker controls, but I don't fully understand how to do it. I believe in order to keep your OEM headrest controls you will need to keep the OEM headrest speakers amp which is located behind the driver's seat underneath the rear cover.

What I've done in the past is use an aftermarket amp for the driver's seat. I used my rear preout from my headunit to provide a signal. Then I used the headunit's amp for the passenger seat. For the passenger seat I used rear line level/speaker output. For volume control you can then use the fader control on the headunit and that will control the volume coming out of both speakers. However doing it that way you loose the ability to control volume independently.

I've been told that you can still use the OEM headrest speaker controls, but I don't know enough about electronics to figure out exactly how to wire that in....yet

I have an airbag and surround sound if that makes any difference.

I read somewhere that the S5s can use preamps outputs from the head unit. But I have yet to find someone that has mentioned it working well. So even though I supposedly have 50wpc I assume that I will use the fade control. I have the workshop manual for my car. I do not see the wiring diagram for the behind the seat woofers either.

BTW if anyone needs a pdf from the 1990 workshop manual I will be happy to pass it on.
