I made a mut.. S4 Turbo GTUs Vert?
Ok quick background story,
Picked up a 1989 GTUs last year from Virginia Beach
The motor had low compression, had many electrical issues and the interior was mostly junk. The owner seemed like a deadbeat, the car had 3 of these gross 17s on it and one steelie in the front because he kissed a curb trying to drift in the rain on public streets and broke the wheel off the hub...
Pulled the motor with plans for an S5 JSpec..
Before I had a chance to do any more work I was laid off from my welding job. After a while I found myself in a jam and had to off load the car to my buddy Josh. He didnt touch the car for a few months then he himself lost his job as a forklift tech. At the same time my other friend was abandoning his S4 turbo vert project:
The engine in the vert was this S4 13bt that was just terribly put together, electrical tape to block off unused vacuum nipples, the cheapest hose clamps you could find, it was just all around a dirty motor.
The owner of the vert had purchased this S5/FEED turbo off of Japan2LA in plans of using it.
My friend with the GTUs made a deal with the vert owner to trade a dirtbike for the S4 13bt, and basically anything else he would want from the car.
We then took the entire swap out of the vert. basicaly everything we would need to swap the S4 motor into the S5 GTUs.
- motor
- harness
- n318 MAF
- BPS
- n332 ecu
we also took the front and rear chassis harness, dash harness, even the trunk harness. then other interior items such as the dash, logicon, gauge cluster ect.
Next step was to completely strip the GTUs of the malfunctioning s5 electrical system and busted interior
no pics of that, my bad
Re-installed entire S4 electrical system in the GTUs, having to mod the harnesses as needed including extending wires and eliminating others.
While in this process we sent the ECU to RTek, picked up an S4 blue Turbo drivers seat to replace the completely destroyed S5 turbo seat, yet leaving the passenger sat in as it was in prestine shape. As well as a set of blue manual seatbelts to replace the broken auto ones.
When finding time and money Josh sent out for parts including new engine gaskets and purchasing my S5 to S6 UIM conversion kit and I would slowly rebuild the motor.
(dont let the spray paint job fool you, this thing was pretty rough)
("finished" product)
So to this point all this took about a year of on and off work and buying parts whenever you could afford it. About 2 weeks ago I decided that I was going to finish this project with Josh. BTW Josh has a very good understanding of cars, He was a mechanic for years but all of his experience is based on older chevys and fords. All of us know how different these cars are from those thats why he was uneasy with moving forward witout my help.
Within these past 2 weeks we installed the S4 13b. then traced, diagnosed and corrected many electrical issues, which was to be expected with a project of this caliber.
(S4 UIM was re-installed for now because of lack of funds to make our own front mount.)
(interior just for now, we have a grey S4 dash, S5 radio surround and the shift surround)
So last night we finished up all the final checks, i set the timing, added fluids and started it up:
(obviously not the first start, the engine was somewhat warm already, first runs were used to check and set timing with a light, put the TPS in check, and check for vac leaks. Throttle body has no thermowax, that is reason for the hickup)
Cliff notes:
- 1989 GTUs.
- motor was blown and electrical was shot.
- both I and the current owner lost our jobs.
- got a deal on an S4 TII engine and complete S4 electric system we couldnt pass up.
- Took what was available and made it work.
Basically the point of this thread is not to show off the car and try and say its really cool, I made this thread to show people that anything is possible and you can work with whatever you got.

Front main chassis harness fried. thanks headlight switch
this was nothing, there were about 30 affected wires for about 5'. I still have no idea why it didnt burn to the ground.
Waiting for a replacement harness, and the driveshaft to come back from the machine shop with the NA diff pattern drilled.
Thanks Rob (wvumtnbkr)

Ok, time to bump the thread.
So I found an auto 86 base in a field here in PA, we contacted the owner, he agreed to sell the front chassis harness out of it. It was a pain in the *** to say the least, the car had never been touched as in every interior bolt and screw was still in there ugh FML. But to make it fun we timed ourselves. I tackled the interior and Josh handled the engine bay. It took us 1 hour and 15 minutes to pull the entire harness and have it in our car, and that even includes braking into the car because the owner forgot his key for it! lol.
So with the new harness we threw it into the GTUs and had issues. considering it was an 86 auto base front harness and an 88 vert main harness. So we had to cut some plugs, re-pin some things but after a day or so it was running.
He bought some older used Tein coilovers, and I loaned him my old stock gxl wheels and then we did this:

only needs some small miscellaneous items to be "complete"
