The first thing I noticed about my turbo II FC... The weight of the hood.
The official word on models w/ aluminum hoods from Icemark:
Alum hoods were only standard on Verts and the 89-90 GTUs.
They were commonly found on 86 models with auto trannys or 4 seats (for weight reasons), and most turbos (but not all). They also were randomly found on some Sports, and 88 GTU models but with no rhyme or reason.

Hah, ok. Official as in the closest thing to an answer you're going to get. I don't think anyone knows why there was a mix of steel and aluminum hoods on some models; just that there was. My own guess would be that different assembly plants may have had different parts available to them. Differences in S4 radiators, thermostat housings and some other parts may be due to the same thing.
Did some digging and all I could find was info on the Hiroshima plant (all VINs seem to have the Hiroshima "0"), so I don't think there was even a second one. Different lines w/in the plant sound right. So scratch that idea
. I'm content to leave it as "random."
