First Drive: 1986 Mazda RX-7 (Motor Trend)

I haven't read it yet but I'm sure it's interesting.

http://www.motortrend.com/classic/ro...ive/index.html

plus:
Editor's Note: This year, Mazda celebrates its 90th anniversary and along with an extensive retrospective coming on May 20, we've gone through the archives to bring you a look at several classic Mazdas from the 70s and 80s.

I posted the 1st gen article yesterday in the 1st gen section. There's also an article on the '72 RX-2.

That's an interesting article. It's always fun to see what the automotive writers of the day thought of the FC RX-7. Also interesting to note that a good chunk of the article is spent explaining the virtues of DTSS, though many owners today prefer to disable it. I remember that when the FC came out, nearly everyone was critical of the styling which I admit is very derivative of the 944. However I think for some reason, the looks of the FC have aged a little more gracefully.

Including me, partly because it's really really expensive to replace.

I thought the FC had hydraulic power steering?

It does.

but there is a computer in charge of the steering boost, determining how much power assis is needed at any point, based on data from strategic sensors.

but...
the '86 RX-7 has electronic power steering.

I'm confused. I guess I don't understand what electric power steering is.

It is a hydraulic system, and it is electronically controlled to allow for more/less power assist.

So it's not the same type of thing as the electric assisted steering in the RX-8?

edit: never mind, i looked it up. yes, it's different.

interesting how the FC is regarded as so high tech in its day, while people now consider it a very simple and basic sports car. I guess that's just time and technology marching on.

my neighbor says its the most advanced car you can get in 1987, and i think that might be right, the 750IL didn't arrive until 1988.

i agree, i think the 944 looked cooler in the 80's, but its pretty dated looking now.
