After years of searching, I think she might be the one
For starters, I made this account a while back with hopes of buying a FC back then. At times I would have the money but couldn't find the right car and vice versa. Today I found a guy selling a 1989 GTU for $4,000 OBO and I'm supposed to meet up with him tomorrow to check out the car. From the pictures it looks like a solid car and the guy says he only bought it as a gift for his son but his son has his eyes set on another car so he's looking to sell it now. I have no experience buying cars as this would be my first, have a Tacoma that was a gift from my dad, so I was looking to get some feedback on the car from members here on the forum and hopefully get some suggestions as to what to look for in a GTU. The following is the information I have on the car thus far:
1989 GTU
Asking $4,000 OBO
59k original miles
Automatic
Great engine, transmission, body, paint and tires
No mechanical problems and electrics work perfect as well
Garage kept all its life and well maintained
And has a clean car fax for the car
Originally planned to get a 5speed but considering the condition of this one I don't mind going with an automatic and maybe doing a conversion in the future. Besides that don't really plan to do much if anything to it if I get it. Maybe look for some BBS rims off a vert this upcoming year.
With that said, opinions? Go for it? Aim lower? She ain't the one?

Can you handle the manual swap? Willing to throw another few hundred into it plus labor? If not i truly suggest you do not buy a auto. You cant even enjoy an auto because those trannies are so shitty, trust me on that. Sure its clean but its still auto and all blue. (Im no fan of blue) Id keep on looking because you know the second you buy it your going to say awww man i should have bought that other one that just went up for sale. Thats always how it goes. You can find some mighty nice TII's for roughly the same price. But its your loot, not mine. If your in love with it then sure go for it, if you just dont know then walk away.

Brought her home for $3,500. Turns out the guy had the car for less than two weeks. Bought it off a manager at a Chevy dealership who liked to collect cars and the previous owner before that was some old lady. Bought the car off the collector, took it home and his son just straight up said, "I don't want it. I want a Mustang." You could tell he was disappointed in his sons response and went on to tell me his first car was a first gen which he tracked down a few days after getting this FC hoping to buy it back. Sadly, the current owner of that FB has it in pieces. Looks like I'll be spending tomorrow doing the title change and getting insurance on the car.
Just a quick pic at the gas station filling up the tank.
This expresses how I feel right now

Thats how much i paid for mine last friday! My first rotary beast too.Your lucky you live in texas, mines sitting in the garage as we have shitty winters up here in chicago. I would hate it if i had a son wanted a mustang over an fc, but that just means the dad is doing a shitty job lol
Good luck with the new ride !
