I made a little comparison of my cold startups as I was having issues with slow cranking and well the car was feeling hard to start in the morning.
I know some people are having issues with cold start being hard because their engine might be low on compression or something. But there is more to it than just compression. Mine was hard to start as it took as far as 6.5sec (log ref.) of cranking to get going. Which is annoying. I flooded the car plenty of times.
So I got the starter out to check it out since after checking that the battery was good and wiring was too, there I was.
Cleaned it, replaced the brushes which were 25% remaining on positive side and 10% remaining on negative side and put it back together after greasing the planetary gear set.
So here's some shots of logs I made, both on a morning cold start (24h interval), so you can see the cranking speed difference it made.
A hundred more rpm on cranking and took only 3sec to start the car. This car has been long to start ever since I got it and now it spin like when I used to remove the plugs to unflood it !
I got the full logs if someone wants to look a them. BTW I have MS3Pro ECU, ID injectors, FFE trigger and IGN 1A coils. And even there, the car was long to start when cold.
Hope this data can help some people in finding out their cold start issues.
