So our cars are getting old. that **** sucks because parts are becoming harder and harder to find. especially things that are rx7 specific that no other cars share like radiators.
so i wanted to fit an efan to my corksport radiator. i purchased a blackmagic 180 from amazon via


This thing flows a whopping 3300 CFM at full tilt. should be good enough. but because i have a corksport replacement radiator, it wont fit. so after searching for a shop who can do it, i got it done. but now ive run into fitment issues. DAMN

so i search high and low and come across this unit.

so i purchase it. for less than 300 bucks shipped to my door why not?

so ultimately i didnt know what i was gonna come up against when i got the damn thing. so it arrived today and i did some preliminary mocking up. i dont have a welder so all mounting tabs and brackets will be jbwelded on. so what? sue me.

to say that this thing fits almost perfectly, id be underselling it. why is this radiator not more common? this is probably THE best radiator to put in your FC. Period. it fits between the frame rails perfectly.

what needs to be modified? very little. there are some metal tabs that you used to slot the old stock radiator rails on to. those have to go. then the battery tray, the bracket holding it up, and the foam air diverter that the oil cooler lines fit to have to go. Also, the oil cooler lines will rub, but i have the mazdatrix lines and those come covered in rubber sleeve. ill glue more rubber to where it actually touches, but thats a minor issue. they can be moved closer to the frame rail and out of the way.

the things you will have to figure out are the level sensor. im going to put this in the top radiator hose. done. then there is the matter of the hoses. its almost the easiest thing ever. two radiator hoses with a 45 degree bend in them. thats it. no special hoses needed at all. no weird curves or anything. one thing you will have to figure out is the heater core hose. im planning on using something like this with a barbed filling.

otherwise, its almost a perfect fit and i am VERY pleased with the purchase of this thing.

if you remember K2RD from 20 years ago, they used to modify this radiator to be a bolt in. back there there were problems with the baffle that made it a two pass, it wasn't fully welded...

anyways, the core of this radiator is the same size as the opening in the car, so you can't really go any larger. they used to drill 4 holes, and put dowels in, so the radiator bolted in. off the top i'm not sure where the low coolant sensor went, it might have gotten put on the one corner.

the FD upper radiator hose N3A1-15-186B fits nicely, after a trimming.

anyways, this radiator works! you will have a hard time getting a 2 rotor to get up to temp on the street

 

yeah im looking at the k2rd picture of the radiator and it looks different. the design has changed.

if it cools as well as people say, then why is this not as common as it should be? sure there are stock units but everyone seems to wanna drift FC's now and its only a whisper in the community.

 

Are the serious drifters running V-mounts? Maybe there is a different one whose size lends itself better for that style setup.

 

its good though, the old baffles sucked, so some radiators were great, and some didn't work at all, back then AFCO was a tiny little backyard thing, now they are quite big
