Power steering pumps

Hey all,

During my rebuid I decided I'd rather die than keep the ugly, high mounted, dual pulley FC PS-pump. Well, turns out I haven't got the ideal ratio rack for that. So while I am going through with the idea, I figured it'd be good to have a plan B.

I was wondering; are PS pumps interchangeable? I guess not due to operating pressures / volumes but any real mechanic wanna come confirm that? Secondly; has anyone used a different, smaller pump that can be cleanly installed to NOT stick out like a sore thumb?

Lemme know!

interchangeable with what? the FC used 2 different pumps.

the majority of the cars used the variable assist style pump, its identifiable because it has 3 lines, its unique to the FC. its paired with the 15:1 steering rack

some of the 1990 and later cars use a more conventional pump, with two lines, and this is just a normal pump, so if you're willing to do a little plumbing, you could use practically any conventional pump. its paired with the 17:1 steering rack

Well, from what i've read my 86' NA should have the 15:1 rack, and if 9" fronts do turn out to be too much for my weeb arms to handle i'd like to hook up a smaller-than-stock pump somewhere out of sight. So any tips on pump types / models would be valued a lot o:

Something like this would be epic, but it's got two lines

Not to hijack the thread, but do you have any more info on that? Is there an advantage to a 3 line system?

And since we're on the topic, is switching to a two line pump as simple as blocking the extra port?

Thanks, Chris.

part of what makes the FC the highest tech car of 1986-1987, its only eclipsed by the BMW 750il in 1988...

I found this thread searching "three port steering racks". It is more about the pump but, maybe helpful.

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...-port-1038453/

From post #2.
I havent seen too many 2 port racks...

This might be useful or not. I ran a standard "single out" pump with my miata swap (the stock one) with a 3 hole rack. At first i plugged on hole, and ran the pump into the other. This provided about NO power at all. Steering felt like it did with the car off. Then i switch the inlet and outlet so that i ran powersteering into the top most inlet and this gave me awesome powersteering.

Not really sure what the other inlet does... either its extremely fine (but seriously felt like no powersteering at all) or it acts as a bypass for the pump to vary the pressure.

sidenote: the 3 hole racks are faster ratio!

Here's the search results.

why? the FC system is well documented in the FSM,

http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/manuals/Tr...ing_System.pdf

the 1990-1991 base/verts had a more conventional system with a 17:1 ratio instead of 15:1. the pump will have 1 pressure line instead of two
