Leak around turbo housing w/ pictures!

Anyone one know the cause of this? Car is a 1987 NA to Tii swap s4.

i hadn’t started the car in over a week, I turn it on today and find my engine bay smoking. As soon as I see the liquid around the turbo housing I turn the car off.

I’ll remove the turbo and upload pictures of what I find, but can someone enlighten me as to how this can occur.

Thank you

What did the smoke smell like? Oil burning will have a nasty acrid stink, coolant has a sort of sweet smell that isn't as obnoxious. Cant really see from your pictures, but the oil supply line that goes to the top side of the turbo may be leaking oil onto the CHRA & turbine housing - those get hot quick when the engine is running, and would explain the smoke. Another possibility is the coolant line may be leaking and smoking in the same way - take a close look at the banjo fitting on the turbo's CHRA.

Ooh, boy. Sorry to see this. Is there excessive shaft play/wheel to housing contact? If not the rebuild should be simple.

Anybody know the source of this, how it happens?

last I drove it ran fine no problems, drove at least 30mins, let it cool down idling for about 5 mins and shut the car off. This is my second turbo out in a similar situation

The turbine oil piston ring cracked. Not much you can do about it, parts just wear out.

Seems like I’ll need a turbo rebuild.

On another note, I had another turbo rebuilt by Gpopshop a few years back. I installed it and ran it for maybe 10mins and It started smoking. I remember when I installed the turbo, I primed it cranking the engine over a few times without the EGI fuse in order for the rebuilt turbo to build oil pressure. I contacted Gpopshop and they advised me that it the oil must have been from an oil line dripping on the housing. Not what that looks like to me.

From what I’ve researched, when the turbo is rebuilt, companies may not reinstall a pressure valve in the oil lines??? Causing too much oil pressure making it leak.

Any thoughts?? i really don’t have luck with this.

if its green, isn't it coolant? if so the leak would be from the intake/something.

that turbine housing is pretty knackered though

If it's oil inside the exhaust = cracked turbine piston ring.
If it's wet at the manifold, it's much more likely a coolant o-ring or coolant feed line that's leaking.
Figure out if you're trying to fix an oil or coolant lean and go from there
