Classic Vehicle Insurance

2nd Gen'ers are getting to the classic vehicle point in life. Does anyone have any experience in buying or selling classic vehicle insurance? Every company I talk to says something different.

Many of the web sites want car club's to join. Is this something 7-Club could do?

Thanks,

You don't have to own a "classic" or "antique" to have collector's car insurance. Generally, the only requirements are an agreed value and a yearly mileage/use restriction. I assume you looked into companies like Hagerty, Grundy, Heacock, etc. They're all slightly different so you'll need to talk to each one personally to figure out what they do or don't cover. Some won't cover incomplete cars while others have insurance specifically for "works in progress." Some won't cover track cars while other will cover everything right up to and immediately after "tire touch the track." When asked about clubs their more getting at things like the Porsche Club of America or BMW Owners Club; big, national-level stuff and not online forums.

I actually just went through this for my SA and FC. I ended up settling on $100/yr for my SA and declined coverage for my FC (since it's incomplete) through Heacock, which turned out to be the cheapest for me.

Thanks,

They were on my list. If you could share the magic numbers that made them happy I would be most appreciative (means free beer if you are in the area). PM is fine. So far I have been told I asked for too many miles, I did not ask for enough coverage, asked for the wrong coverage, asked for too much coverage, had the wrong year or something else wrong. Hagerty was the strangest. They asked for how many miles, I asked what they cover, they said 7,500, I said 7,000, they looked and said sorry, that is too much and you cannot change you answer. They then told me I could not re-apply.

thanks again.

I'm not sure, maybe you're asking for too much mileage? Neither of my 7's are daily drivers and both are registered as "antiques" in VA so I'm already limited to their use. I said 500 mi/yr for both and they didn't say anything. Another thing could be the agreed value? Since my FC is so heavily modified and my SA is in really good shape I didn't get hassled too much. One company, I can't recall the name (not Hagerty, Heacock, or Grundy), had an issue with the value I gave for the FC because they went off NADA values. Needless to say, I didn't go with them. Regarding coverage, most told me it had to be the same or more than my DD insurance policy. In fact, more than one company required a copy of my DD insurance policy in their official application package. I can see why they don't let you change answers for things like mileage though. They probably don't want people trying to play the system.

Thanks,

I really appreciate it. I hope to do more than 500, I think it will be a blast to drive, but I will go conservative in that area. Does Heacock have a referral program? Do you get a perk if I say you sent me?
