Axle change and/or driveline questions
Axle change and/or driveline questions
Hello,
I'm hearing noises from underneath the car that I believe are attributed to the driveline. Either Driveshaft, or Axle Shafts. (side note: axles are original with 300k on them)
The noise only emanates when the car is running forward.
I have had to replace the driveshaft twice before and both times the noise initially came as a squeaking noise when the car was in reverse. This noise progressively became worse.
Now, the noise is a sharp snapping squeak going forward only.
Both axles and driveshaft are still available to purchase but I have questions on the rear axles. I have a 1986 S/4 N/A. Early model. Does anybody know what size axles this car uses?
I have heard that rear axles came in two sizes. How do I order the right axle shafts the first time? I'd like to order them before I take it apart if possible so the car doesn't sit around.
Anybody got any words of wisdom regarding axle shafts? . . .Like change your bearings while your down there?
Or even better, a link to a procedure here on the site?

the two sizes are small for the NA and big for the Turbo, simples
its pretty easy to change, you unbolt from the diff flange, and remove the big axle nut, and it should come out (probably want to break the big nut free first)
