What year will this car be mounted in? My '87 just has two screws on the top and two in the bottom for the cassette with EQ. This should fit in the normal location.

From what I understand, please someone correct me if I am wrong, the surround for the CD equipped and tape equipped is different. The CD player opening in the surround need to be bigger. So... If your car has never had a CD player check the opening on the surround.

I am not certain the wiring harness is the same between the different years or equipped head unit either. BTW, in the GXL, the amp for the speakers in the rear with the speakers in the speaker enclosure. The two amps in are with one speaker, I Believe in the passenger side. My stock head unit is completely passive.

The Forums are still ALIVE! I’m putting it a 88 GTU. I have the amped speakers but curious how the amp is really supposed to mounted.

When you say amp, you are talking about the head unit in the picture? I said those are passive but meant these are just preamps.

The four screws holes in the dash should line up with the four tabs on the head unit. Two on top an two on the bottom.

I would have just grown the extra little box in the cavity and let it float around in there in my younger days. 😂

Find somewhere to screw it down out of the way and call it a day.

Apologies for not getting to this sooner. I think you're gonna have some issues converting this over in an S4 unless you have the rest of the upgrade. These variants can look simple but be annoying. The S4 CD player has it's own special section in the manual after the rest of the sound units.
1. The head unit mounts in the dash and case-grounds to the chassis via the mounting tabs and screws. If its not case grounded, it's not going to work. The plugs look the same, so it should hook up to the harness in the same manner. This part is straight forward. The rest is not.
2. If you are trying to adapt this to a regular S4, the speakers aren't going to line up. The regular S4 has an amplifier for the front two speakers, and each rear speaker had its own amplifier. The CD unit had two front speakers, that look to be driven by the head unit. That small boxy amplifier is the door woofer amplifier and is very similar to the S5 door woofer amp. This one seems to connect with a DIN connector for your unit, as opposed to a simple plug in the S5 revision. I am willing to wager the internals are pretty darn close though. These amplifiers mount up under the dash, see page 15-134 in the S4 manual. They are also case grounded. The S4 CD unit has the door woofers, driven by that little amp. If you didn't get the door panels from the car with the CD unit, you're gonna have to find somewhere else to put these. Lastly, the rear speakers for the regular S4s have the amplifiers in the speaker tubs. The S4 CD drives the rear speakers directly, much like the S5s. These rear speakers are also bigger than the ones in the amp tubs.

Wow, thank you for the awesome reply. Super helpful. I’m having a wiring expert come over to take a look on Sunday.

I still have it but never installed it. Ive been told my many sources they are super finicky. You’re more than welcome to shoot me an offer. I can’t offer a refund because it’s a 30 year old head unit.
