Wow, first I see a rotary powered miata, and now I'm reading about a miata tranny being put into an FC. Tight work. I wish more girls in FL knew this much about cars. I've only met one, and she doesn't visit this board any more.

its *almost* a blot in...the imput shaft has to be modified. as far as holding power, this swap is very common on E Production race cars, including Bob Neal's 08 car that i crew for(i told him he could have mine as a spare! )those cars are putting down more power than a stock T2.
if your looking for a tranny that can hold more power, you might want to take a look at the mazdaspeed miatabox, the one for the turbo miata.

for anyone who is interested, miata gear ratios are available here: http://www.idsfa.net/miata/gearing.html

and rx-7 ratios here: http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/ratios.htm

Hmmm...I dunno how the shorter 5th gear is going to really make a difference on the track unless you're hitting 100mph+???

I would think an FC turbo trans would be a much easier swap, even if you're still stuck with a 0.762 S4 5th gear versus the Miata 0.814?

yeah, the 5th gear isnt anything ill be using with this car on a track. the real difference is in the closer ratios. TII would be easier...but thats not what i was going for, i was going for better(in regards to what im doing with the car)

This thread isn't about the GTUs tranny or 5th gear, so it was pruned

Jeez i wish those damn idiot's would go away!
Anyway how do you compare the weight's of the two's internal's? I would think the miata would be lighter? Regardless this is the most interesting thing ive read about for an fc in awhile thank's!

The FC tranny is pretty light too... I doubt there's a huge difference between the two in weight.

i believe the miata internals are lighter, though as dDuB says, not enough to be noticable.
i would really love to see someone put a turbo miatabox in to a turbo fc...

Still, if its putting down any sort of power i bet you'd break it quickly even if it is the turbo miata box.

well, the normal miatabox can handle an EP car, and thats more power than ill be making on this car.

if your gonna do all that work why not just rip that whimpy 1.6 outa the miata and drop the Wankel in it? Much faster and lighter. Not alot of cutting required.

If I find a wrecked FC, RX-8 or something with a wankel I will do that to mine (eventually).

Oh if your worried about the transmission breaking I think that there are a few people on the miata forum that have like 300+hp on a stock miata transmission (they are using the RX-7 rear end since it is stronger though).

1) It's not hp that kills drivetrain parts - it's torque.
2) I don't doubt it can "handle" 300hp, but I wonder how much they are babying their cars?
Take one of these cars and take it to the drag strip...I bet by launch #10, the trans is dead...
