Thumbs up Gas Mileage Improvement

Just some updated info on an old topic. Peter Farrell added a Wideband to my car, which allows the Tec-II to go into closed loop mode. This was done to try to pass emissions testing. (It still failed.) I began noticing that I didn't seem to have to fill up the gas tank as often, so I started checking the mileage.

For those who don't remember or never knew, I had previously reported getting 13.5 mpg in my daily commute and driving around town. It rarely varied by more than 0.1 mpg. With the wideband, I'm seeing 14.9 - 15.1 mpg on the daily commute. I haven't had an opportunity to take a trip and check the highway mileage, yet.

good luck on passing smog! i just blew up my cat, it melted into the mufflers.

i was getting 15-16 in daily driving, and it did 19mpg down to sevenstock (400+miles feeway each way), i think that could be bettered a tad.

I didn't believe you could run it ultra lean until I tried it myself.
Yeow, the EGT's get stupid hot!
WOT about 900C
Ultra-lean cruise @ 1150C!
You think the cats can handle heat like that?

george, can you explain how PF got the wideband to work with the tec2, i have a wideband unit that has a variable voltage output that i can match to the tec2 narrowband input. I'm not sure if you require some sort of signal buffer circuit additional to this however, i was told by peter last summer to stay away from closed loop (go figure) and electromotive not too long ago that what i am talking about is impossible, i don't see why however.

a) the cat was tuned to 14.4
and b) no! it literally ran into the mufflers

interestingly its only the rear 3rd of the cat that failed, the front is fine.

Maryland has an exemption: Spend over $450 in emissions-related repairs, and they'll let you go. The wideband was $549, so I guess you could say that it DID get me through emissions.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: Since I don't do much of the work on this thing myself, I sort of accept on faith what I'm told. To the best of my fuzzy memory, I was told by Peter and by Russ Turner (when he still worked at Electromotive) that the Tec-II and the Tec3 would accept input from a wideband and would automagically adjust engine management to compensate. Knowing that both are far more knowledgable than I am, I just write the check and intone, a la Capt. Picard, "Make it so."

Somewhere in those conversations, I'm fairly sure the phrase "closed loop" popped up.

I apologize for my appalling ignorance and strongly urge you to call Electromotive to get the most accurate information.

With that said, IIRC, the admonition to stay away from closed loop applies to cars that are pushed far harder than mine. If you're running mega-boost and WOT, you want total control of what's going on. Leaving anything to the meddling of the computer could give you the opportunity to re-build your motor. Again, check with someone with more hands-on experience than I have to get the best advice.

some widebands output a 1v signal so it can run an afr guage, or go to the ecu so it can run closed loop
