We will see you there. Maybe next year.
Cool! How do you like the AEM?? I'm trying to choose which ECU to go with..

Hopefully I'll get to meet you.. I'll be in the Exedy tent.

That would be the one. Yes the roads are awesome. I went through a set of tires on my work truck during the time I was out there.
I see you are form GA, we have an office there. I work for JE Dunn as a superintendent.

I really like the AEM. If you haven't bought one yet, I would wait for the series 2 version. I plan on upgrading when avail.

I was able to do a quick back pressure check toady. It barried the gauge at over 35psi of backpressure vs 23-25psi boost.
I am sure that is what is holding it back. I've been messing arround using the wastegate to bleed some of it off.
Just need a turbo with a larger hot side. Maybe tax return time.

i dont see why it wouldnt be. i mean you have to look at what it is and what its not. its not a caddy so i doubt its a silky smooth cruiser. but id imagine driveablity is more of a personal preference than anything else.

It is fully streetable in my book. The only thing I will change is my clutch. I do fine with it, but in stop and go traffic it really sucks. Other than that I drive it whenever I can. Just need to watch the throttle in the corners.

No new news, back from Sevenstock, weather has been cold and rainy. I installed a 250psi pressure sensor I had, to measure the pre turbo backpressure.

Congrats on the numbers.

Interesting, I'm looking into the Series 2 unit too. Though due to timing and what I plan on doing will probably go universal instead of PnP unit that will hopefully come out.

Envious

We had a break in the rain today. I had a chance to drive the car and take some readings.
Backpressure is high, spikes to 60psi as it spools, then 40-50psi.

The seals on the turbo are going out. I am getting some oil in the intercooler plumbing and smokes off the exhaust housing now. I guess it will be an excuse to look at changing the turbo sooner.

I assume that the drop in back pressure corresponds to your wastegate opening up. Supposing that is the case, does it fluctuate much after the initial drop from 60psi to 40-50 psi? Anyway you could share a plot of your logs? Any chance you'd be willing to share a picture of your manifold as well so that we could try to glean the efficacy of the various design features in helping/hurting your back pressure problem?

FWIW, I'm willing to bet that moving to a T6 is going to alleviate this problem in a huge way for you.

Thanks again for sharing all of this information.

Good luck.

I am looking at the s480 w/ the 88mm wheel or the GT4718 88mm turbos.

Both will require a new manifold made. There is no way they will fit with just a flange change. I will need to reposition the turbo.

I'm going to talk to a local turbo rebuilder about new seals. It would be nice to be able to use it for a while longer.

I was able to get the backpressure down to the low 30's running 20psi boost which it will hold till just over 8000rpm.

The exhaust oil seal is getting worse now.

What about running a GT45 with the Tial housing? That should be similar frame size to what you currently have. You might be able to just switch the flange.

I just turned down the setting on the boost controler, the wastegate is open more.

I tried and tried to find a balance point to keep the boost / backpressure balance by adjusting the duty cycle of the solinoid for the wastegate.
30%= 20psi holds all the way to 8500 about 30-35psi backpressure
50%=25psi falls to 20psi w/ 40+psi backpressure
70%=25psi falls to 20psi w/ 50+psi backpressure
90%=25psi falls to 20psi w/ 55+psi backpressure
My guess the turbo is out of it's eficiency rang above 20psi and choking out.

I also saw an old post on the AEM forum. A guy from Russia used the same turbo on his 20b, and hit 765hp at 18psi.

I wonder what I would hit at 20psi.

Turbo is dumping a decent amout of oil now out of the rear seal. Smokes bad out the exhaust and off the turbo.
I also heard that Comp Turbo is able to rebuild ITS turbos. I guess they took over part of ITS when the company went out of buisness.

So, theres a PNP system for the FD with a 20b conversion? The idea of having to go to a standalone is what's been holding me back from doing the swap. Awesome thread!!!! I'll be putting the wife up for sale to finance my build now!!!!

stand alones usually are easier and work much better than a piggy back system.

I've been very happy with my Apexi Power FC. I would like to be able to use a similar system if I were to go with a 20B.

I also have a 1.15 housing which I was using when running 15psi.
Sorry to hear about the accident. It appears that " R " trim might be just a cut down Gt42R turbine wheel..
