clutch option

while i have a BREW in my FD i do run a T56 trans. for the last 4 years i have used a QuarterMaster cerametallic double disc. it has always been borderline as to offering a pleasant driving experience as in better stay away from stop and go traffic.

this year it started slipping around 550 in April. i had it rebuilt and was back on the dyno in October only to have more slippage.

My tuner shop, Beyond Redline in Green Bay, Wi happened to have just finished a beautiful 3 rotor and had collaborated w Mcloed for the clutch. the direction from the owner was he wanted his wife to be able to drive it...

i was mumbling to myself about my slipping clutch and having to miss the Texas Mile (again) when Luke suggested i hop in the 3 rotor and take it for a run around the block to evaluate the clutch.

it took me four feet to make a decision.

almost OE clutch pedal pressure, ability to feather take-up.

and it holds 800 foot pounds! (according to Mcloed)

while i am in the process of acquiring (4-6 weeks) the clutch so i haven't actually had it in my car i have experienced it in the other FD and therefore suggest it for your consideration.

the package from Mcloed consists of a custom flywheel that bolts to the rear crank counterweight, and the RST clutch package.

pressure plate is 1900 pounds spring pressure

double disc/organic sprung linings 9 11/16 diameter

my guess is they would build it w any spline option you want on the discs.

this may or may not be news or valuable to the 3 rotor community, i did search Mcloed prior to posting and came up w zero.

i am totally impressed w the feel of the clutch and can't wait to get it in my car.

Howard, since you have the t56, is this clutch package a push type? If so, would he have a fd pull type? I've made the mods to your auto bellhousing adapter plate so I can mount the fd manuel belhousing to the t56. This allows me to retain my 3rd gen style cluch however, I did find a new clutch disc to fit the t56 spline. I'm NA with my set up but at some point, I will boost the 20b so this new clutch option would be nice in a pull-fd type with t56 spline clutch disc.

This is some great news and while the discussion it here:

Just something interesting, but may be rumor:

Exedy now makes custom replacement discs for the twin/triple plate, so that you can use the same flywheel, pressure plate, and pull type design and mate it to the t56 input shaft...

No?

Yea I haven't messed with it in a couple months but I only have a couple more mods to the tranny to make everything work. I have to cut out a section on the tranny to clear the slave cylinder (which is still in my car). This mod may not be for everyone since you do have to cut into the tranny body to clear the starter and slave cylinder.

Me too on the "trying new things" part! Thing is, back in 2010, I already had the auto bellhousing and clearanced my firewall for the additional bulk with my engine moved back. I did that hoping that the t56 would fit behind it later. I just really didn't want to spend the money buying a totally new clutch set up and changing everything over. The mods I've done so far have been VERY easy. I've actually spent more time with the thought process than actually doing physical work. I'm pulling my engine next month so I can start the swap. Can't wait!

Howard,
We talked several times as I did the exact conversion you did. The QMaster clutch is ridiculous to drive in my 3 rotor. I was wondering if there was another decent option. I'm interested to know what you think of it when you get it installed.

Thanks,
Bobby Poage
