best place to buy intercoolers???

best place to buy intercoolers???

I am in canada and wanted to find a off the shelf
intercooler for the 20b in my fc, but cant find anyone
selling, in canada,,,, does anyone know of a good place
to get coolers,, even if i have to get one from the u.s.
what is the place to get one??

o ya i dont want a kit!! just the core with end tanks..

Just go and visit your local diesel turbo repair shop, that's where I'm getting mine made from. The semi's have cores that are like 3x4' ! But, the guy who fixes the cores can make whatever size core/endtanks you want by cutting them down and welding it on, much cheaper than spearco and the others. Mine's costing me $300 for an estimated 26x24x3"...beat that.

You gotta be a little careful on generalizations.&nbsp Do you have pressure drop specs on these "truck" IC's?&nbsp Performance automobile IC's are designed with less pressure drop over the IC core, so their internal design is slightly different.&nbsp These "truck" turbos run at a much higher boost levels, so pressure drop is not that much of an issue.

Man, I dunno what you're going to stuff that in, but last time I checked, 24" high is not going to fit in either an FC or an FD, unless you're going to tilt it a little?

I am not sure if I want a truck cooler for the
very reason reted gave, I know that some of the truck
coolers don't have the agitators inside the tubes and
are not efficient at dropping charge temps at all with
out having great surface area.
which if you are putting a mac size cooler in front of
your car isn't a issue mind you lag would become a
factor with something that big

My Spearco 2-248...
1) Has a core pressure drop of about 1/2 psi at 20psig boost and 500cfm
2) Operates at about 83% efficiency at 500cfm and 10mph face velocity.
3) Is available with custom end tanks welded at the factory.
4) Most importantly, actually FITS in the FC (barely), with a height of 15.6"

Sorry, should explain further. I'm getting the Rotary Extreme FD-FC CWest bumper that is being custom made so I believe I can fit that size...however, since I don't actually have the bumper yet (yes I know I should have clarified earlier) ...that is an estimate based upon what the RE guys are using but that should be relatively close to what will be going in there. Maybe it'll be more like 26x20x3 but I'll find out soon enough. I'll post and eat crow at that time for what the real size is that I'm able to jam in there.

However, now that you mention that, I'm curious now to find out just what their pressure drops are. Regardless, it'll be interesting information to post for other peoples' knowledge. I thought that if you're in the 70-80% range it was an acceptable place to be in for efficiency. Correct?

That's an opinion, as most people judge intercoolers on how shiny they are, or by the slick ads in the rice magazines, LOL. However, I would agree with that efficiency range, although I would try for the 75-80% range if I had the space. Also try to keep the core pressure drop below 1 psi, or below 1.5 psi for the entire unit (core + end tanks).

I don't think you will get a 20" tall core in that front end, but it's ALWAYS worth a try. For those who don't know the trick, you can fabricate a cardboard mock-up of an intercooler to make sure that it fits before you spend your $1,000. Don't forget to figure in the end tanks and plumbing.

I would like to know that stats on those truck intercoolers, too. Please post the info if you have the means to test your system once it is operational.

Thanks Evil, wasn't trying to be a smart a@@, just thought I had a way to beat the system...always a compromise, cheap...not as efficient. Hey! At least I learned something today

I would like to remove the stock hood latch and replace with an electric solenoid to help create a little more room up in there for the IC but we'll see. Anyone else tried that? I don't want hood pins because the car is a daily and I don't want access in parking lots to the bay if someone wanders along and thinks it's a good idea to try.

Something I totally forgot about is that InitialD FC is gettting the same bumper as I and has quite the huge one tucked in there. Take a look here at https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=83124

I'll just see if he can duplicate his work for me I'm still going to try and find out about the diesel IC's for everyone's knowledge however.

Sometimes the system can be beat, but not very often. It would be nice if someone actually tested one of these truck intercoolers to see how well it really works.

Yes, the only way that my Spearco FMIC fit in my front end was by removing the hood latch (see the pics at my www icon). I will be using locking hood pins. Your electric latch idea sounds like it will work fine just as long as you can find a good place to remount the latch, but it's not going to keep the hood on the car as well at speed (assuming that you care).

BTW, according to my calculations, the S4 front end didn't quite offer enough flow for the IC, so I swapped it out for a S5 front end.
