Apology For 20B "Incident"

I tappears that I created quite an uproar in a recent "Fastest RX7" thread when I mentioned that the fastest FD would probably have a 20B , since they generate 550 hp stock . I understand that no RX7 comes with a 20B factory installe. What I was trying to say was that if you took an FD and installed a "stock", non-ported 20B in place of the 13B, and kept all the turbos, etc., it should, according to several rotary specialty shops, generate up to 550 HP. I based this guess on documentaion from Pettit Racing, and articles in Modified Magazine wherein an RX7 and RX8 had 20B's installed, generating up tp 950 HP. It seemed like a good candidate for the fastest RX7 out there.
Now, before the flame war commences, I'd like to say that I would like nothing more to be put in my place and corrected, because I'm ony looking for the best way to make my car fast. BUT PLEASE, correct me with information, or a useful thread to view, NOT by simply telling me I'm stupid , or that I smoke lots of crack.

Thanks for the heads up, and thanks to everyone who is informative, not insulting. I guess I'll just have to get a 20B myself, to see if it's any good.

Pettit charges $35k to perform the 20B conversion and mod the 20B to 550 bhp (it makes about 280 bhp stock). We'll wait on your review....

I found a place in Canada who will do it for $16-18,000. I should have that by the end of the summer.

Let me know if you can send 20B's to the states. If I can find someone who knows what they're doing, I'd rather get the parts and have the conversion done near Michigan, not in freaking Canada.

If he can't spell "pompous", do you really expect him to spell my alias right?

What I want to know is how you get 900+ hp out of a 20b RX-8 ?? It doesn't have turbos, and since you're replacing the thing that made 180+ hp N.A. to the wheels, it should be substancially less, unless you change one of the factors or I missed something !?

Since converting a stock car to a modified 20B would cost well over $10k in parts alone, I would be concerned about the quality of work there.....Also, who is tuning your ecu? What ecu will you be using? Does this mystery shop have any experience doing this?

I'd be concerned about cost overruns also. It's very easy to stand back and say "oh, it'll cost X", but once you get into the project, especially if they've never done one before, it's very easy to overrun the initial estimate by a considerable amount.

Eric was babbling about Bi-State installing a Viper T56 for $2,500, which was supposed to include the cost of the transmission. Well, even from a junkyard (and good luck finding one that has a Viper with an intact transmission) you're talking $1,000-$1,500 for the 6-speed. Now you need an adapter plate to bolt it to the back of a rotary engine, a larger master cylinder to actuate the Viper slave, a new driveline, a transmission brace, a differential brace if you eliminate the PPF, which is almost a given, a flywheel and clutch, and wiring, and that's just what I could think of off the top of my head. However, since no one has done this before, there's going to be a lot of trial and error (labor) involved in getting it to fit and then getting it to work, which are often two different things.

My advice is to get anything you're quoted in writing and find out what their policy is if/when they exceed the original estimate.

The shop wouldn't happen to be Rx7specialties would it? If so they are more than capable of the doing the conversion.

gotta respond.....! Those who know me know that I have documented 190+mph runs in nevada during the silver state classic.

I am not pompus as I don't pretend to have the fastest rx but I also don't think I have the slowest. The guys in Calgary may be good but I personally would not go near them. I asked them about doing up a spare motor and all the guy could talk about was an upcoming article in a mag about himself...the guy lost out to Pettit as he didn't want to discuss my project.

For those of you who figure they can do it on the cheap into an FD just remember little things like motor mounts, bump steer and you will want to go to the pros. As an example, engine 5K, intercooler 1.5K, ecm 2K fuel system 1K and you havent even rebuilt the engine yet!

Their website is www.rotaryengine.com, but I don't remember the name of the establishment. The guy I talked to on the phone said that the 18,000 price included the new mounts , intercooler, etc. and ll the adapters needed to make the swap. As far as an earlier post on the RX8, those numbers (950hp) were after extensive mods done to the RX8's intake, fuel, and other management systems. Those cars weren't anywhere near stock.

Yup. It's RX7 Specialties. I looked up their ad in Modified Magazine.

Rx-7 Specialties is known for building high quality, strong, reliable engines at very fair prices.
Some of their other services are questionable, some love it, some hate it, some good things, some bad things.
Everyone agrees they make good engines though.
