3 rotor sound

hello,

Just a quick question (with maybe a long answer).

Why does the furai not sound like any other 3 rotor i've ever heard?

Is it because it runs on menthanol. Is is becuase the 3 rotors i've heard may not be perph-ported?

Sorry if i sound like a complete newbie but if i can get the furai sound from a 3 rotor i wont be bothering with an expensive 4 rotor build

thanks

James

2 rotor fires every 180degrees, like a 4 cylinder

3 rotor fires every 120 degrees like a 6 cylinder

and the 4 rotor is every 90, like an 8.

the PP with modern EFI adds the crazy idle, it might be like 1500 kinda rpm too, which is higher than all the other race cars, they generally idle around 900

the 4 rotor idle is more v8 ish

I think its because the furi is technically a 24x, or a 3 rotor version of the mazda 16x concept?
im not sure if it is, but i seem to remember reading somewhere that it is.. it would explain it.

The Furai is a PP 20B, built by Jim Mederer (Racing Beat). It is probably the PP that is giving it the note you are unfamiliar with, but that's based on not understanding your familiarity with the rotary engine.

Yes, I think it is mostly because you have not heard a non-turbo peripheral ported 20B before.

The strange rotor-shaped muffler may also have something to do with it. You can buy them from Racing Beat and Mazdatrix.

Either way, that's a lot of money just for sound.

Anyone know how they keep the furai so quiet. All the P-ported cars I've ever been around were loud as hell. and with the car having a MR layout there is no way they have alot of room to work a bunch of exhuast into that chassis.

They sound similar because it's the combination of hi rpm and PP. Here's another 20b PP that sounds nearly identical to the Furai & 787b. In the below link, you can hear it at :50sec and beyond.

Maybe I saw an odd video. I was talking about the idle exhaust. maybe racing beat just designed one amazingly quiet muffler at idle. Either way. If it wasn't for the gas guzzling and lack of low end torque parts I would be all about a P-ported 20B in an FC. I would do it just for that high rpm screaming exhaust note.

It sounds the same to me.....to get that sounds so crisp all you need is a 20b fully bult engine with super lightened rotors offered by racing beat, ceramic seals and a tiny rull race clutch....dont forget the sequential transmission to get the winding sound too.

Here is mine for kicks...

i havent heard the furai in person, but the 787B and speedsource rx8 aren't that loud. they are about 90's honda ricer loud

the modern (late 80's) cars were all designed with mufflers, the ear piercing loud cars are the 70's racers, like the C&D rx2, and the imsa gtu 1st gen, THOSE are loud enough that if you're up by the corkscrew at laguna, you can hear them start and warm it up in the paddock DURING a race.

the PP does give an intense idle though, even if its not a huge DB number
