The huge numbers also come from all the hardware you need to get in order for the car/motor to work safely; turbo, FMIC, EMS, wiring, all the interconnects, clamps, hose, , suspension, radiator, transmission, etc, etc. People are not just quoting $10K to drop a motor in, it's all the other stuff that goes into the project as part of the conversion.

Even if you can do most of this stuff yourself, who has access to a welder and is proficient at welding, a hydraulic tube bender, metal brake, english wheel, etc, etc. You're extremely fortunate if you do have access to such equipment and have the time and space to let a car sit around for (how long exactly do you think it's going to take to do this yourself?). Most of us have real jobs, families, etc, and don't have the time a college student has (assuming you work as well?) to do this stuff.

My point is; don't oversimplify. The numbers we are throwing around are pretty accurate if not less than some of us have spent already on our toys.

I'm at around 700 hours + on mine for the total project so far...

LOL, that is typical of anybody who attempts this project.

If you can 'guarantee' the total project will cost no more than 10k I have an old FD collected dust....when can I drop if off at your shop!
Hehehe, it would be the most pathetic 20B conversion you have ever seen, but a 20B would in fact be under the hood, and the car would run under its own power (all 220rwhp of it, lol) for around $10K. Also, as you have pointed out, a professional shop would not be able to make a profit with a $10K conversion price, and nobody in their right mind would do it for that price unless it was their own car.

Total $$$ in my car is around 100k (things like a carbon driveshaft are not cheap). I am not saying it has to cost that much, it is what I spent.
I have spent over $30K on mine, and it doesn't even run yet, lol. You are right, good parts cost money. The cost of the conversion depends on how good you want you car to end up.

Evil...

Its kinda funny...my budget started at 30...than 40....than screw it, do it right from top to bottom.

As an example, I have a real nice set of wheels (18x8) that are now collecting dust as they were useless on the car. I now have 18x10 and 18x9 which (5k later for wheels and rubber) provide marginally better traction. They do look nice though!
