20b Rx8

Hey I'm doing the 20b swap into my rx8 next month and was wondering about the set up of the swap. Will a Greddy Emange work as far as the air fuel cont. Also will there be any probs. with the harnes as well? I plan on using the stock tranny as well. If you guys have any suggestions about the swap let me know.

No. Yes. Do a lot more research before you turn a single wrench.

Please for your own safety do not even think about using the stock RX-8 tranny. It's just a reinforced MX-5 Miata tranny, it cannot handle that type of torque. It can barely handle the torque the RX-8 puts out stock, you're going to shatter it.

Also please set aside at least a $5,000 oh **** fund.

Well I dont know alot of info yet. I took my car to a local shop and the owner of the shop said that it he would get me the motor and use the stock tranny and use some sort of air fuel cont. I have a greddy emanage but im not sure if that will be good enough. im not sure if this guy is lagit he pulls up in a rx7 and i asked him if it was a 20b swap he said it was and when he popped the hood the motor had a 13b intake manifold. i called hi out on that and he continued to say that is was possible to retro fit the 13b manifold to a 20b. Is that possible?????

Well your first red flag would have been the stock tranny. Don't use that guy, he's will take your money and break your car.

We have used the stock rx8 trany in two test days and a weekend of hard racing with our 20b pp with no problems... Drag racing might be a different story but it holds up pretty good in a gt-1 car.

Don't take this the wrong way, I am truly trying to be helpfull. With this statement ALONE....You should NOT swap a 20B into your car. It is not as simple as dropping a K20 into an older civic... A 20B swap is fairly well involved and requires a great wealth of knowledge. Like it was mentioned above there are only a handfull of shops in the country that do it wtih any sort of competence. Why don't you just look into going FI with your 8? There is a guy here in town that puts down good power and it is a joy to watch him drive the car. But this is just my .02.....

I would break it down and take a careful look at it before you race with it again. It's just a reinforced miata tranny, which weighed nothing and had a fraction of the power of a 20BPP.

We started out with a race fd trany hard gears the works... And it would last one weekend... Than went to turboII tranys and they seem the last at least 4 weekends.. Both those trany we used royal purple.... Now we using the rx8 trany with redline and we have 2 test days and one race weekend on it with no problems. shifting around 9000-9200rpm

i guess i will let you guys know what happens

I guess the real questions are... why do you want to do the swap, is there a problem with your RX8? and is this your daily driver? how much money do you have for this project? and how much time do you mind it being at the shop?

Is this the shop where the guy told you he had a 20B swap using a 13B intake manifold?

I have also used the RX8 tranny on a 13B-RE making over 400rwhp for 3000 miles without any sign of an issue. It is the same transmission as in the S2000 and has been known to take quite a beating.

By the sound of the rest of this thread, the transmission should be the least of his concerns.

I did this swap a year or two ago in my RX8. I wouldn't bother doing it again, just bolt on a turbo to your RX8 and hope for the best. There are a few good options for this, I recommend the major horsepower upgrades section on rx8club.com

well I thought i could get more power easy rather than buying a turbo kit for $5k i mean a turbo kit just takes the fun out of building a car. I thik trial and error makes the end product more rewarding. Now as far as the swap goes i was wondering if you guys can help me out and tell me exactly what im going to need for this swap. I dont have time to check out the forums because i always work. The reason I came to this forums is for the help from all the ppl on here because they know what i dont. Now as far as manifold i have this coverd. now what kind of computer should i use??? I have a greddy emanage will that work? I also know that i need an fmic, turbo, bov, exhaust, clutch, flywheel. Now will i have to replace the spark plugs or the ignition system. Will i also need to change the fuel system as well? I want to buy a gt35r turbo because i think it can produce respectable numbers and not lose its driveability.

If you don't have time to search the forums, you don't have time to do the swap. You clearly don't understand what's involved in this. Too bad Ted didn't come in sooner and squash this.

"No."

We have 2 or guys in the UK using stock 6 speed RX8 Trannys on FD's. They are all cars running in the low 10's on the quater mile. No failures at all they are all well over 400wrhp
