Question 20b peices to buy?

In looking at various 'deals' for 20B motors, etc. it seems they usually come w/ the tranny, ecu, wiring harness etc. out of the Cosmo. Now I KNOW that if you want to stick w/ the stock auto tranny from the Cosmo, then all of those parts are necessary to do the swap.

But the question is, if I'm putting it in a 5spd car (FC), do I really need any of that extra junk? Or can I save myself shipping costs, etc. by just getting the motor by itself?

Better yet, can I recoup the costs of shipping that extra stuff by selling the extras? I mean, will the Cosmo tranny really do any good in ANY car besides a Cosmo? (i.e. Would ANYone even bother w/ trying to swap that tranny into an FC or anything or is it basically a throw away part?)

I'm still just weighing all of the options, and trying to figure out where costs can be cut, recouped, etc.

Also, if anyone has any leads on a 20b motor, I would be interested.

thanks!

P.S. I'm not committed to any swap yet, just considering options. However, I know I'll be doing A swap, just don't know what yet. Also, I want to DO the swap, not BUY the swap.

you basically only need the engine block and intake manifolds. the injectors are nice, and the stock turbos, if you want to use them. basically everything else is useless unless you are trying to use the stock ecu, and then you need EVERYTHING

I'd seriously doubt there is a market in the US for used automatic transmissions out of a Cosmo. Just like you said just save your money and get just the engine.

Those Cosmo trannies are strong. Maybe someone can adapt them to drag racing? All you'd need is a small ECU. Maybe even an EPROM chip would work. Burning EPROM chips is cheap.

i think the fd or mpv/929 tranny controll box is similar enough to be made to work

Ok, just what I expected actually. Could be made to work, but probably limited market at best...
I'll look for just the motor for now.

Zach, thanks, I sent you an email.

I've heard mentioned that it may be helpful to have the coil packs out of the Cosmo... any thoughts? It sounds like there are at least 50 different ways to do the ignition for a 20b swap, but if it's helpful and they're available when I purchase the engine, would it be wise to get the coil packs?

Yes, it would be a good idea to get the coil packs from the Cosmo. I think they'll work with the E11 that's coming out (some year) soon. Speaking of which, my ignition is coming along nicely. I don't need the coil packs because I'm doing my ignition the old-school way, but I may still keep them for when I go into phase 2 of my Cosmo project.

it looks like the jc ignitors work like trailing fc ignitors. they have a "tach" signal that fires every 120degrees and 3 toggle signals, that fires 1,2,or 3 rotor. the e6k wont fire them

If you want the block and internals, I have one for sale. I will take $2,500 plus shipping. It was done up by KD Rotary. It is ported and has 13b exhaust housings on it. The engine will be sitting in the trailer next year as a spare if I don't sell it.
