Perkins and cummins both used and some still use it on highway tractors, and power plants.. Some race cars have tried it, a variation on the theme is twin charging, which some mr2/corrolla people do...
Basically the heat of compression of the air is reduced by doing the compression in stages rather than all at once...max
Good explanation Max.

I'm not sure what size turbo flaco's running, but it looks pretty huge.

would make for some fun if the car did not rip apart with the 1500 rwhp you were making.

boy, you guys must be bored. Staged compression is completely unnecessary in a gasoline rotary engine. It really only adds efficiency if the turbo is way out of its range. Anything under 45psi is well within the range of a properly designed turbo, and since all but a very few 20Bs will blow apart long before that, not to mention that at 45psi you would be making over 2000hp, its kind of a moot point.

as far as the triple small turbos, it is a neat idea, but i personally don't expect it to work very well. One large turbo is much more efficient than 3 small ones, in spool time and compression efficiency. The only gain would be the lack of flow losses in the collector, but only if a divided intake was used as well, and even so doubt it would make up for the flow losses in the smaller turbos.
