yet another TII swap question
hey guys i know that there have been alot of TII swap posts but i couldn't quite find what i was looking for in the search so if you guys can bare one more post.
i'm the proud owner of a 1980 rx-7 and was considering swapin in a 13b and was just wondering how possible it would be to do that i haven't been able to find a swap that hasn't been a GSL-SE. also if i could get a ballpark of how much it would cost that would be awesome.

SE or not makes little difference.The majority of the work is the same for all 1st gens.
The obvious differences are your trans tunnel hole is WAY off for anything but a 79-80 trans shifter.On later 1st gens,its only off by an inch and this is remedied by cutting the selector shaft on the TII box and installing an 81-85 shift tower.
Also,all carb'ed 1st gens will need an SE fuel tank and an external EFI fuel pump.Or the alternative(what I did) is to convert the 1st gen tank to a 2nd gen in-tank fuel pump.Its quieter and simpler,and not too hard or expensive to do if you know what your doing and make it safe.Not sure if itll work on a 79-80 since the tanks are smaller,if you can upgrade to a later tank it fits perfectly in those.The hardest part is welding in the slosh baffle and mounting ring.The rest is just cutting and measuring.
I did mine for less than $2000.Thats with me doing all the labor except the fuel tank welding,custom exhaust and custom driveline(each about $150-$175)
Thats cost was for the entire,80K S4 TII setup from the wrecking yard,trans,fuel tank,SE mount/oilpan,all new gaskets/hoses and expendables.I actually spent a lot more on upgrades while the motor was out,but they werent neccesary for the engine to be running and driveable,making the stock 182HP,so I dont count them in the actual swap "cost".
I later upped to a S5 engine and controls.It was much more expensive and complex due to the electronic OMP and the fact my engine was built with nearly all new parts.

with an 80 count on a min of 2500 to get it right. It can be done half assed for about 1500 If you get a great deal on stuff. plan on gettin all new soft parts. in a post a couple of weeks ago someone fabed side mounts and said he would make more, sell them I think for around 100. that could save you some time. most who do this end up upgradeing a lot of things incresing the cost. my self included. things most people do not think about in the cost are better clutch,hoses,belts,fluids,ic piping for front mount or hood scoop for the top mount ,extra gauges expendables like cleaning suplies ect,ect pm me if you need some info on the trouble areas when you get started.

my swap was done into a 1982 chassis, only real difference between that and a 79-80 is (as stated above) the shifter location.
The GSL-SE gastank WON'T fit, as far as I know. Early (79-83) cars have smaller gastanks, allowing a full spare wheel. On S3 (84-85) cars the gastanks are larger (5 liters more) but this means the spare wheel well is less deep, hence the "home-coming" spare.
If you want you can cut the spare wheel well, but the easiest and cheapest solution is to use a anti-surge tank (a small tank used to make sure the EFI pump never sucks air).
I think my swap has cost about 4500-5000 euro (about $4800-6000) but in general parts are cheaper to get in the USA.

I notice KUHLRX7 states he has a 79 with GSL-SE gastank. Doesn't this mean the tank hangs lower then the 79-80 would have been? Or am I wrong?

The FB tanks surge out real good.. if you're running a turbo setup you'd be best to use a surge tank to maintain pressure under boost.
My 13B-T swap into a 81 FB has so far run up around US$18,000 - just map out what you want to do, and what you want to achieve. Don't just rush in, would be my advice.

the tank hangs a bit lower but no problem. use spacers and longer bolts. no need for surge tank. there are a few other differances. the shifter location can be moved back to accept the latter transmissions
