yet agin another problem with my 7 :[

So after almost replacing the whole ignition another problem occurs.
i turn the key then engine turns then starts and idles but when i let go of the key it dies and sounds like a jet landing...? it just started happening....i still have to put in my new rotar and points but i don't think that is the problem does anyone know what could be causing this? maybe the ignition is what my friends tell me but i have no clue on how to diagnosis this. any help would be a dream :] I need my 7 back running before winter and i dont want to take it to a shop :[

That sounds like the starter motor continuing to spin after the magnet has disengaged

I'm not sure what could be causing the jet landing sound but I had a similar problem with the engine quiting. The engine would crank and run but as soon as I turned the key from the starting position to the run position the engine would quit. Turned out that the ignition system gets its power from two different circuits. one during the cranking operation and another from the "run" circuit. My problem was a simple blown fuse. Of course I didnt figure this out until I had replaced the ignition switch!!!!!Check all your fuses.

If I remember correctly it was the circuit labeled "Engine". A 20 amp fuse on the lower right in the fuse block on my '79.

I do not think it will end up being the ignition switch. If the fuse is not the problem then I would find a tester and see if there is power going to the fuse panel on the engine circuit. Its most likely the fuse.
