Yep an other exhaust system question!

This is a picture of the '79 12A exhaust system. Would it be possible to fit in a catalytic converter where the connecting pipe is? I know that the '79 is equipped with a heat exchanger but if I replace it with the presilencer and everything else that comes with the full exhaust system, would I be able to make the cat fit? It wouldn't need air off the air pump because I would buy a pretty recent cat(if they fit on my car..) It would be a hi-flow cat to make sure I wouldn't lose too much hp... so would it be possible?

you can replace the presilencer with a cat intead of putting a cat after the presilencer. but you have to streach the cat more because the preilencer is longer that a 81-85 catalitic converter and you will loose power anyway by putting a catalitic converter. unless youre are going with a hi flow one

I dont see why you couldnt do it. It wouldnt really matter where it is as long as its in there somewhere, right? High flow would help too, and the newer ones dont require air injection, so Id say sure, go for it. Just install the exhaust system, then drive to an exhaust shop and tell them you want a cat put in there. Im sure they could make a new pipe with the ca in there for you .

I don't think you could put it much past the pre-silencer because the cats have to be hot to work. I would put it in place of the pre-silencer like eddierotary said.

yea but if I put it where the presilencer is, the exhaust would be way too loud

It would take some more work, but just swap the cat and the presilencer.

Just go like this: Header> Cat> Pre-Silencer> Muffler.

You might have to make a small pipe with flanges to bolt onto the header then to the cat, and then a pipe to connect the cat to the presilencer, and then another pipe to connect the pre silencer to the muffler...If that makes sense...Like I said, it would be more work, but I think that its possible. Theres plenty of room under there to make something work .

Personally I would just forget about the pre-silencer but I agree with RMD's configuration above. I think it will all fit better with the cat in front of the pre-silencer.

Since it's a 79, is there any way to get a fresh air pipe to the cat?

a 79 has a fresh air pipe,,, unfortunatly I don't know exactly how it works(well I do but not in detail). I know it gets fresh air from all the way back near the muffler, gets pumped by the air pump(right?) and gives fresh air to the heat exchanger. Now I wonder if I would be able to give fresh air to the cat instead.. but I wouldn't need to if I take a newer cat..
